What is a “working community”?

Politics.co.uk@politics.co.uk

“The perception that promises can subsequently be revisited by a political establishment removed from the realities of working communities has left lasting scars”, writes Labour MP @melanieonnmp.bsky.social 🗣️ EU free movement debate risks undermining voter trust www.politics.co.uk/2026/10/mela...

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

Do read this persuasive and entertaining analysis of the criticism that the civil service acts to thwart the efforts of politicians and their advisers.

Are you a Labour MP (or office staff for same)? Have you been contacted by GB News & asked about my estimates of how (2024) constituencies voted in the EU referendum? Please remember: that was 10 years ago. Some people die, some turn eighteen—& most importantly, some change their mind!

Okay, I take it back: WhatsApp groups are good, actually

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

At one point he had a Whatsapp group with 10 million people in it, coordinating action. Which I didn't even think whatsapp was infrastructurally designed to support. And yes, whatsapp is of course a meta network, but the strategy was to be everywhere, to act redundantly, to be unbannable.

Fascinating to hear Lloyd-Webber explain he retired from the Lords out of frustration at seeing people flown in to vote on legislation they hadn’t heard debate on, but didn’t feel the need to retire when he flew in to vote on legislation he claims he didn’t know enough about Funny that

This is all mad, obviously, and a lot of it is not new, sadly. But I had not heard before that everything had gone downhill since the Peace of Westphalia.

There is someone on an Altrincham fb group complaining that parking prices are killing the town’s high street. You can never win with these people

For those who don’t know Altrincham, it’s perhaps one of the best examples of high street revival in the country *and* has very good public transport links

67. The village of Neversink was completely submerged in the 1940s to create a new reservoir to provide water for New York City.

Big fan of Prince William walking out on to Graham Norton being bowed and curtsied to, HRH this, Prince that, then Robert Irwin just says “good to see ya, mate”

I do not understand how you can act like political action is solely electoral. How do these people think that right to vote was secured?

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

What an awful outcome. Journos, you should read this and cover this. The British Army crushed gravestones and used the rubble as infill, then the MOD covered it up and refuses to rectify the situation.

Following a Freedom of Information request and intervention by the Information Commissioner's Office, the MOD has finally disclosed what happened to the material removed from Basra War Cemetery in 2003. www.commonwealthwargravesiraq.org/missing-panels

Ofcom published a report today that pretty much declares the Online Safety Act a complete failure

This has now been changed. One tiny fix at a time

Signs that the Church of England is still not inclusive: I cannot fill out the online form for my entry in Crockford’s as a General Synod member because it requires me to list degrees I do not possess

This is absolutely infuriating. In England, we absolutely do not take this for granted. Most courts do not provide adequate facilities for parties and their lawyers. Public access is often difficult & sometimes impossible. These are luxuries that the UKSC & not much else possesses.

Joshua Rozenberg@joshuarozenberg.bsky.social

The idea that we should resurrect the judicial role of the House of Lords — which ended in 2009 — is not only impractical but would be against our national interests, the UK’s most senior judge said in a lecture last night. rozenberg.substack.com/p/remember-t...

I still enjoy being published in the list of Synod chairs where everyone else has a style, title or post-nominals and then there’s just Sam Wilson

Hungarian art historian, Barki, was watching ‘Stuart Little’ in 2009 when he spotted the painting ‘Sleeping Lady with Black Vase’ by Bereny, hanging on set. A set designer had bought the painting for $500. The artwork vanished after a 1928 exhibition in Budapest and was presumed lost after WWII ❤️

The future of government is TikToks of Martin Lewis pointing at things we don’t like, and Andy Burnham vapourising them.

Good Lord. I haven't seen an e2 node in the wild for quite some time. Also relevant though - and declaring the interest that I work for his other think tank - Martin Lewis launched this the other week: small-ideas.org
