Isn’t the USA’s eagerness to vote into the White House a man the courts already identified as guilty of rape just another mark of the profound misogyny of American society? Whether or not Trump ever faces consequences for his sexual crimes, the misogyny will remain. In spades. #LineDanceTaliban

Lula’s victory in Brasil and the Student List’s win in Serbia show that the slide into rightwing authoritarianism isn’t inevitable. Whether over two years or three weeks, progressive majorities have been roused to defeat the far right through the hard work of organising.

I wish politicians would stop talking bollux on stuff about which they know bugger all It isn’t treatment that’ll sort this out (important though that is). It is asking why our society causes so much mental illness - especially in children & young people. Poverty is the MAJOR distal causal factor.

The i Paper @theipaper.com

“Healey should remove anxiety and depression as a reason to claim benefits and offer people treatment instead. It would be better for the individuals and a fraction of the cost.” Read more: trib.al/cxsKwxw

Eg Poverty is strongly associated with •ACEs in childhood (Trauma; abuse/neglect; parental conflict/domestic abuse; parental mental illness, addiction/ alcoholism; neighbourhood violence/poor cohesion) •Stress •Exposure to violence inc. racism •Addiction/alcoholism •Mild intellectual disability

All drive poor mental health, from anxiety & depression, through to severe OCD and schizophrenia. The most powerful preventative action we could take to improve population mental health would be to try - as much as is feasibly possible - to eradicate child poverty. UK rates are obscenely high.

“Nearly half of peers were privately educated, compared with just 7% of the wider population. Around one third went to Oxford or Cambridge, compared with just 1% nationally. And 11% attended some of Britain’s most elite schools, where annual fees can now top £60,000.” To him who hath is given

That’s the common theme in what I’m writing I think. White mid-upper class academic men are allowed to have flaws, allowed to do (actually terrible) things, and have them forgiven/forgotten. But for w-class men (Bill Varley), women (Maud Cunnington), MOC (Arday) one mistake or flaw is unforgivable.

I agree. Objecting to 'DEI' isn't pedantry. It's objecting to a UK university staging an event that is using far-right US rhetoric to denigrate UK universities.

It’s not about initials It’s because his use of DEI shows he approaches EDI in the UK through the lens of US history, US politics & US racial politics With the additional complexity of the US White Supremacy & US far-right Christian Nationalism of today It’s misleading, dangerous & very very silly

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

Time to put this into a wider context. Schools and exam boards make it harder for girls/women to see themselves in science than in Humanities. Universities are cutting provision in Humanities, where students are disproportionately female. Is this what equality looks like?
