We should make a much bigger deal about the fact that Prof Ostermann is the first female ESICM president. Congratulations!

🤝 A moment of transition at #LIVES2026! Prof. Marlies Ostermann officially takes office as ESICM President. Welcome, Marlies! A heartfelt thank you to outgoing President Prof. Jan De Waele! Welcome to our new Executive Committee members 👉 www.esicm.org/esicm-welcom... #ESICM #IntensiveCare

It’s only causal inference if it comes from the Inférènce region of France, otherwise it’s just a sparkling correlation.

Causal inference is the art of knowing exactly why your estimate isn't causal

(1/22) Over the last few days I have been discussing the role of formal causal inference in RCTs, and in general the role of formalism and rigor in statistics in twitter with @f2harrell.bsky.social. Thread with an example for why both are fundamental for biomedical research:

Big news! 🎉 𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚎𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚜 1.0.0 for #Rstats is out. It’s a big number and it feels like a big step. I wrote a blog on the challenges of interpreting statistical models, SPEED, cool new features, the future, and a 5 year package development and writing odyssey. arelbundock.com/posts/margin...

In this special episode of Learning Bayesian Statistics, @alex-andorra.bsky.social is joined by Andrew Gelman, Aki Vehtari, and Richard McElreath to discuss Bayesian Workflow. From simulation and hierarchical pooling to causal inference, there’s a lot to unpack 🎧 lnkd.in/geX2QkxV #Bayesian

Thank you for your kind words 2 responses: 1/ Source control is good for patients with sepsis, so if we can find the right patients, this could be more than just marginal for those patients 2/ ICU care in general is a game of inches; much of excellence is just cumulating marginal benefits, right?

I fear this is a losing battle, but I'm trying very hard to avoid using the term "AI". a word that can refer to anything from LLMs/GenAI through to control systems and prediction models through to linear regression has no useful meaning at all

I have just resigned from the board of "Statistics and Computing", along with 17 other Associate Editors. This was a difficult decision: this great journal has published many tremendous articles under the leadership of EiC Ajay Jasra, and before him David Hand, Gilles Celeux, and Mark Girolami.

This one I find really interesting ever since one of the American ED physicians introduced me to the idea of the “physiologically difficult”airway. An AFOI negates precipitous falls in BP and CVS collapse. If. You know what you’re doing 🤔 #ansky

How long does it take for blood to make a full round-trip around the entire body during exercise? 🫁🫀🔁🦵 Only 10-sec! That’s way faster than I intuitively would have expected But we’re just reproducing what’s been known for the last century👇 #science #medicine #rstats #datavis

The standard random-effects model in meta-analysis assumes that the amount of heterogeneity is homoscedastic. This assumption may not be true. I derived and examined various tests for heteroscedastic heterogeneity. See osf.io/cavhy for a preprint describing these methods. #MetaAnalysis #RStats
