I think with the data stuff, doing analytics well where you are honest about the limitations of what you know is better than trying to match the sheer amount of data the big platforms have.

To do this NOW you need to get around all the ad blockers which means 2 things: 1. all the communication between publishers and you happens server side, you can't actually trust that just because you sent a user a script they'll execute it. Harder to bring publishers on board.

2. You need to work really hard to not piss users off so they don't drive demand for ever more sophisticated ad blocking. Which mostly means impose standards where ads that totally break browsing or take up the whole screen are just not allowed.

The thing about online advertising is that the industry is full of scammers, and there are very few people trying to actually just do the thing well, which is sell ads and deliver them. There's a reason the big platforms are the only ones making any money.

Even with the help of AI I think to do adtech well you'd need dozens of engineers so you're talking about needing a lot of VC money to do it. It's not a SASS you can start with a couple people which is why you don't see a lot of startups in this space that aren't scams.

One of my big frustrations with David Eby is he cancelled a highly effective, partially revenue neutral carbon tax just because the feds did so (Québec didn’t), leaving a big hole in our provincial finances, only to be annihilated in an unnecessary election 1.5 years later. Excellent legacy.

The idea that it’s somehow savvy politics to let bigotry go unanswered is just incredibly ignorant. You have to just not have any political awareness or memory of fairly recent history to make the argument.

This is a post in reference to the Türkiye deal (name removed because I’d rather not engage). When did Canada stop doing business with Israel? Like I’d be in favour but it seems like there’s a whole fantasy Canada living in the heads of American Zionists.

Completely uninformed guess for BC election - relatively close match between Cons and NDP in popular vote, but a big green turnout, maybe 12%+ resulting in: 63 Conservative 2 Green 28 NDP

It strikes me that Surrey is a really important power base for the right now. It’s a big city, but it doesn’t vote like one.

The big question for the next 4 years is "how much do the BC Cons cater to the chud part of their base when governing?" and I don't think anyone knows the answer right now

Looking like record-low voter turnout in B.C. tonight. With 97.3% of ballot boxes reporting, Elections B.C. reports a turnout of 46.63%.

Not nothing and maybe mattered in some ridings, but I don’t think you can get to an NDP majority by adding up all the green votes. I still feel a more unified left and centre left would be stronger but we lack organizations that can keep a coalition like that together.

Doerkson just promised "certainty" in BC (signalling at his promise to repeal DRIPA). Great time to re-read @adampolsen.bsky.social for @thetyee.ca. thetyee.ca/Opinion/2026...

Greens at 11% of the popular vote is big enough you can’t ignore them, small enough that I don’t buy what a lot of progressives told me, that if the NDP adopted their platform they’d be winners.

In my ideal world you’d let the leftists run shit like harm reduction and police accountability because you need people who are in some sense radicals to take that stuff seriously. But you need some bloodless technocrats to set tax policy and make sure homes get built.

At least this hasn’t happened with Sim still mayor, or with Alberta getting ready to vote on leaving. But it’s so ludicrously and tragically unnecessary.

At this point I’m pretty much in favour of merging the BCNDP with the greens, it’s pretty clear that a fractured left of centre can’t compete with a united right. Not sure if either side really would want a merger but it’s the right thing to do.

Over on The Other Site, the City is being attacked for posting two men pushing a stroller. Tobi and suggested that a Bradford mayoralty would result in a city wouldn’t post that kind of content I dared to ask why and have been getting bombarded, but nothing compared to what City staff is getting.

If the greens do win the balance of power again (a possible but at this point maybe not super likely outcome) I sure hope they don’t waste it this time.

When I was a kid no one wore helmets skiing. It was just normal that every season someone you knew would just get grievously injured running into a tree or whatever.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

There's something so bleak about Canadian Old Guy centrism: sorry if your kid needs a good schooling, there are deficits to think of, why are we splurging on nurses etc. The root of it is they have no interest in the future. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

Hmm. I was reliably informed by economists of the highest pedigree that we, as the small country, had zero hope of having any tariffs reversed and should just sit down to 'make a deal'. Another "L" for Team Captitulation.

This is why we fight so hard for lower speeds. Kids will be kids, cars are too large and hard to see around, and frankly our streets suck. We hate seeing these stories. But travelling at 20km/h, the child escaped with minor injuries. At 50km/h we'd be writing a completely different post.

what gets me about the current surge in resistance to climate policy is it has never been more obviously necessary, cheap, or easy. half this stuff is on the shelf!!

David Roberts@volts.wtf

Not just the fastest, or the cheapest, or the best, but the *only* possible solution to climate change is a rapid global buildout of clean energy infrastructure. If you're standing in the way of that, you're not working on climate change & should be honest with yourself about your priorities.

To the people who are still talking about how Canada is "not taking Alberta seriously" -- what on earth are you talking about? The PM is an Albertan. The leader of the opposition is an Albertan. Our national politics revolve around Alberta's interests and concerns. What else do you want?
