looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation
Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

Before (2021) / After (2026) Place Saint-Gervais, Paris Centre. In 2025, a memorial garden commemorating the November 2015 terrorist attacks was created on the former parking. Note it’s rare to find an old photo of such an unremarkable place back then ! It is from Wikimedia Commons, taken by Chabe01

It's a new Stone Age in London, with stone apartment buildings and a stone demonstrator exhibit showing how it's done. Because it is silly to grind up limestone, cook it, and then add water to turn it into... stone. We could be doing a lot more of this in Canada- we are made of rock.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Once all the Safeways are redeveloped is there another grocery chain we can fall back on to provide 90% of Vancouver's housing growth?
Finished the Tainted Cup, which was a delightful fantasy murder mystery, and was surprised to see the acknowledgments end by thanking @jerusalem.bsky.social. Neat!
TIL that the Oakridge development was required to have a private car share service with 42 cars (70 at full build out)... what the heck?
Rezoning: 650 W 41st Ave (Oakridge): CD-1 amendment to remove parking minimums and shared e-bike requirements, and cut car share provisions. https://engagevancouver.ca.engagementhq.com/650-w-41-ta
putting the substantive issues aside, this sounds funny coming from former attorney general Lawyer McLawyerson
My dad was a lawyer, and he used to tell me: no matter what happens, lawyers always win. And if the Conservatives bring personal injury lawyers back into our car insurance system, that’s exactly what will happen. The Conservatives want the lawyers to win big and they want you to pay for it.
Interesting, someone's swinging for the fences (single-stair building on a single-family lot, using the provincial Transit Oriented Area for cover). One to watch (and please write in in support).
Rezoning: 2150 W 16th Ave: 6-storey, 100% market rental building, 24 units, 2.89 FSR. Rezoning from R1-1 to CD-1. https://engagevancouver.ca.engagementhq.com/2150-w-16-ave
