Really sucks that the US is now the destination of choice for overthrown despots, but that's what happens when people think "both sides are the same" and allow the worst people imaginable to gain power in the US govt.
After having been ordered to surrender his passport and not leave the country, Bolsonaro has reportedly fled Brazil on a private flight to the United States. Buddy boy better hope he's got somewhere else to go after 2028, because his ass will be extradited ...

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

Politico wrote up Zohran playing basketball with the uncovering-a-big-scandal tone the same day the NYTimes wrote up "credible allegation that The President of the United States raped a woman" as a political strategy story. Broken media in a nutshell

There is an international, well-connected network of fascists promoting far-right candidates in elections (and coups) across the world. The guy who owns the site Yglesias posted this on is one of their leaders. Be careful of people advocating for their opponents to disarm!
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.
This is a great discussion. Abdul is great. Make sure to check out the M4A sections www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7MV...
There's a reason the tech-oligarchs will oppose democracy. The people will reject them.
Google was really trying to hide its water use figures, to the degree that it got the council to try to keep its water use figures secret. The community finally got the actual numbers and found out Google was using 29 percent of the water in the community. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854

You can't beat fascism by agreeing with fascism. You can't beat fascists by accepting a fascist frame. Corporatist Democratic Party leadership needs to be defeated and jettisoned. We have to fight them, not because we don't want to fight Republicans, but because they refuse to.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC - @electdemocrats.bsky.social) is running anti-trans ads now, so I don't know how you can say the party itself isn't embracing transphobia. There are still some good Dems out there, but transphobia is apparently a party value.

I can think of better adjectives than "Controversial" for the headline. How about "damning" or "veil-piercing"? "Fever-breaking" or "Cult-destroying", maybe?

@timmiller.bsky.social is correct here Until there are 1000 progressive candidates running in our elections, the coalition to defeat fascism will include people you don't agree with 100%. Vote your conscience in primaries. Vote for harm reduction in generals. m.youtube.com/watch?v=rz2F...
Everyone is the hero of their own story. *rewatches video* Yes...even Matt Yglesias *rubs temples* thinks he's a hero.
A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"
Many people decided not to stop these people from getting back into power because they COMPARED the two parties and found them both wanting. They forgot to CONTRAST.
This should be framed as infringing state sovereignty but it won't be. This is LITERAL BIG GOVERNMENT, but nah. apnews.com/article/alas...

Allowing these people to get back in charge of our govt is the sin of our time.
Disgraced "anti-sex trafficking" org Operation Underground Railroad — now Our Rescue — is shifting to deportations. It won a $158M contract to provide legal services to migrant minors, despite little experience and clear ICE ties. Advocates say it could help facilitate trafficking.

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?
From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.
