TLDR; there are a massive number of overseas manufacturers who are making their living off regulatory loopholes that make it too easy to import dangerous e-motorcycles if you *call* them e-bikes, or add enough "e-bike-like" features to get past customs. And often, they're being marketed to kids.

...and as a result, *real* e-bikes — which are basically traditional bikes that are a little easier to pedal up hills, and rarely go above normal-bike speeds — are smeared in the press, targeted for restrictive state laws, and have their potential to get people out of cars badly suppressed.

I’m not sure it’s a warning sign? She crushed Bradford, and won not just the downtown core (where she won *huge*), but also won enough votes deep into the suburbs that have been hard for progressives to win. There simply isn’t a path for bike-riding pinkos to win big in the deep amalgamated burbs.

"In her second term, Chow needs to get better at linking property taxes to visible service improvements. And she needs to make it clear how a progressive Toronto can deal with the real issues Bradford raised over the course of the election." Good commentary as always by @graphicmatt.com

I've always believed Oxford Street could be so much more than a road. Today we begin a new chapter as the nation’s high street goes traffic free, creating a place where people can spend time, enjoy the atmosphere and experience the very best of our city.

Sutcliffe is a symptom of a governance problem. Amalgamated Ottawa is a failure and needs to be divided into normal cities and towns again.

I mean, Amalgamation of Ottawa was meant to do just that - to end a progressive city council. And yet, if not for a mayoral candidate who had no business running for mayor (yet), the voters may have finally defeated Mike Harris.

Good try, really. It was worth it and honestly could have been yours if people read the writing on the wall. Want to lead the campaign for de-amaglamation? Everyone would get what they want and need. We never will with Ottawa in its current form, it will forever hold us back.

Well, it SUCKS here in Ottawa, man I just love it here in the Kingdom of the Parking Lot

It's voting day! But political participation is not evenly distributed across TO. We mapped the last 3 trips to the polls to the city's 585 census tracts and calculated turnout - it differs from election to election, but broad geographic patterns recur https://ow.ly/eUwL5100MH9

Turnover at a glance: Nunziata –> Padovani Perks –> Chan McNally Saxe –> Layton Moise –> Stikuts Fletcher –> Ehrhardt Bradford –> Erskine-Smith Myers –> Chen Other than the loss of Myers, this is going to be a pretty strong Council for Chow.

Watching members of the Ottawa establishment fawn over Sutcliffe's win over in the Bad Place is just nauseating.

Between tonight’s definitive Chow re-election and the people showing up for our bike lanes the last week goddamn does it feel good to love Toronto these days!! ❤️

Fun fact: There are 443 municipalities in Ontario that are holding elections today, in addition to Toronto

Yup been saying this for the last 3 elections, what the suburbs and rural people want and need is so different then what us urban dwellers need and we are second thoughts. What is so close to being a great city is watered down again and again. Who's starting the campaign?

Is this like the maybe surprising fact that Laval (the Mississauga of Quebec) has a mayor who wrote a book on car-free neighbourhoods?

Mark Shaw 🇨🇦✌️🇪🇺@markshawtoronto.bsky.social

@alvintedjo.bsky.social is winning Mississauga so far, he's the most urbanist candidate, pro bike lane, pro transit, pro housing, etc.

Nearly as many people live in Mississauga as on all of Vancouver Island.

HUGE news out of Mississauga Ontario, one of the most important urbanizing cities in Canada — Councillor @alvintedjo.bsky.social, who I was very impressed with while advising the city before the last municipal election changed everything fast, has defeated BOTH former mayors, and is the NEW MAYOR!

Ontario civic election night is so wild because you find out whatever happened to federal cabinet ministers and tv weather presenters: they’re mayors of towns you’ve never heard of that have populations twice the size of Saskatoon. Ontario is absolutely inscrutable to Western Canada.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Canadian cities need a new deal in the constitution. This should never happen.

Troy Pavlek@troypavlek.ca

The UCP might make Edmonton pay up to $170M to rip out its own bike lanes. I've heard reports that the UCP has been asking for costs of full network removals. City numbers put that at $150-170M This is the same gov't that just spent $130M on a glorified opinion poll.
