Highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) on a mink farm in Utah, US. Interesting comment by mink farm owner: "The mink are routinely fed raw organs of livestock, including cows [bird flu also occurs in dairy cows in the US]." See also recent opinion paper: www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

Grantmaking has leveled off, so it looks like NSF will make around 6,200 new grants—down from an average of ~11,000. That's a historic low, not seen since the 1980s, when NSF was a far smaller organization. Left was our projection three weeks ago, right is the current data.

I'm thrilled to share that UCSD Biological Sciences has launched an open-rank search for a transformational researcher, with a particular focus on structural biology/cryoelectron microscopy! Come to UCSD and enjoy our fantastic research community, world-class facilities 🔬, and pretty good weather 🌴🏖️

NIH funding curves posted at grant-witness. It looks like grant making is slowing down noticeably and we are in the now in the last month of the fiscal year. It seems like "NIH" may be challenged to get all of the appropriated funds out the door (even if that is their intention).

I am just saying the Edit phase represents something that the panel does not sign off on- only the SRO. Because the new proposal puts exceptional weight on the written critiques and the resume of discussion, this is a completely altered balance and are the checks on the Edit phase now sufficient?

MxA is one of the broadest antiviral proteins mammals make. It’s a big reason most bird flu strains never get a foothold in people. The rare ones that succeed have learned to dodge it. How MxA actually recognizes viral targets at the molecular level is unknown for a bunch of technical reasons.

🧪If you’re feeling defeatist and tempted to brush this off because you think they’ll ignore it, know that it can still move the needle for legislators and serve as evidence in future legal challenges. It doesn’t have to be profound. I posted my call to reject these proposed changes, you should too.

New: The National Science Foundation is preparing to claw back some $500 million in funds from some of its core science programs in physics, math, computer science, and engineering in order to fund a project from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Every missing grant should have gone to someone. Last week @science.org reported that the NSF cut research by 20-30%. That's maybe why only ~12% of 2025's grant total had been awarded by June 15 2026 (~70% through the fiscal year). Funding can be restored. Lost scientists? Not so much. More 👇

My friend's NSF CAREER received the highest possible score (Excellent, Excellent, Excellent: High Priority) and it was rejected today. This would have been my friend's first extramural award, 5 years after starting their lab, exactly when grant $ is make or break for an Assistant Professor's career.

Been wondering why NSF isn't spending most of its FY26 appropriation? A $1.5B tech initiative may be the reason. And big cuts to hundreds of research programs could be just the beginning of the bad news. www.science.org/content/arti...
