There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Not an ai apocalypse doomer or whatever, but entering a world where the normal operation of cybersecurity is vast swarms of hacker bots battling vast swarms of defender bots 24/7 at a scale beyond human comprehension doesn't seem like a *great* path forward.

climate disasters are here and worse than predicted, diesel is 6+ bucks a gallon, and solar panels are cheaper than mid grade plywood. yet mysteriously it’s some big obstacle!

I think this is one of the things that throws people about AI. We aren't used to a conversational counterparty that can't take accountability for misunderstandings. Your work, as an AI wrangler, is to make it difficult for the machine to misunderstand you.

Tilmon Edwards (Dirigo)@tilmonedwards.com

Even if the instructions seem plainly and obviously correct. If the machine does the wrong thing, it is because the instructions were incorrect. That is the definition of "incorrect" when dealing with machines - instructions are incorrect if machine interpreting them does the wrong thing.

Good morning with good news: EVs in UK had best month ever in September & were 45% autos sold! Full-electrics (BEV) surged 36% to a record & were 28% of sales. Plug-in hybrids were 17%. Chinese EVs are available in UK. UK is world's 7th largest auto market. electrek.co/2026/10/02/u... #energysky

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

an interesting thing about how Mamdani moves: he injects meaning into everything the meaning of being a New Yorker, the meaning of hard work, the meaning of unity and cooperation among neighbors I think people genuinely want meaning and that’s not an unreasonable or unrealistic political craving

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

built in dictation on macos 27 (and iOS 27 if you have iPhone 17+) are really fast and accurate — third party Whisper or Parakeet based dictation apps are probably unnecessary for most people. highly recommend trying the built in one. you'll still need apps for, e.g., transcribing a video though

I remember reading a book about energy policy written a generation ago and overall I felt it was helpful read but I chuckle to remember how it wrung its hands about China, how massive its carbon emissions, and what could possibly incentivize its transition what, indeed

Bloomberg News@bloomberg.com

E-trucks are booming in China. That's helping the country cut emissions, strengthen energy security and dominate another green transition sector. bloom.bg/4yiF9vH 📷️: Gilles Sabrié/Bloomberg

tfw you know more effort went into aligning the input and container border radii than 90% of the underlying infrastructure

Insane OP username pull but setting that aside yeah the one drum I refuse to stop beating, much to my boss's consternation (sorry James!) is that *everything needs to look and feel cool*. UX needs to be as viciously and ruthlessly optimized as performance, and right now it just plainly isn't, at all

the failure of the open web and the success of snaptokgram is that the latter put usable means of expression into normal peoples' hands

LLMs aren't made of neurology except in the most handwavey sense. They're made of narrative. That's why I started calling them text elementals: they're not human, they're most-likely-text generators we bent into living stories in a prose format centering the characters User and Assistant

You’ve heard of “oh no, I accidentally became important at work”, now there’s the sequel: “oh no, I accidentally created load-bearing company infrastructure”

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.
