Half of the Elan Valley International Dark Sky Park events team. Assistant school exams officer. Mender, tinkerer, maker. No anti-car zealots or authoritarians of any stripe.
21 October 1966. A coal waste heap collapsed onto a school and nearby houses in village of Aberfan in Wales, killing 144 people: 116 of them were children. The tragedy was one of the worst UK disasters. The Inquiry blamed the National Coal Board, concluding it was culpable.
Some projects take a while. A Lima N scale bar car for the rake of Corail coaches I've been trying to assemble for almost thirty years. Still need two others, and enough Fleischmann close coupling kits for the resulting five coach train.
EDL18 (the 2-6-4 tank) is where my model of 80097 (see post a while ago) started. It was probably three rail originally as the pickups are home made, although with new wheels and couplings I've no way of telling
1956: Hornby-Dublo Sundries, Model Railways and Locomotives from Meccano
(+Wheels On Axle; Station Names; Lubricating Oil; Hornby-Dublo Spanner; Connecting Wire 5-Yard Length; Brush Spring For Locomotives; Brush For Locomotives; Edp15 Hornby-Dublo 'Silver King' Passenger Train Set, B.R., and more)
I am of the generation that was entirely shaped by 9/11 and the GWOT. Our worlds changed irrevocably in ways we couldn't have imagined as young teenagers, watching the planes go into the towers.
May all those who died - in the attacks, the wars, and their various terrible aftermaths - rest easy.
Some thoughts from me having just returned from speaking about regional security (😬) in the Gulf.
The Gulf states are loudly pissed off with Iran, and more quietly so with the US and Israel. The UAE in particular feels personally targeted by Iran.
They are, most fundamentally, tired of this shit.
Latest project completed. Hornby Dublo based model of a BR 4mt tank, numbered as 80097 which was seen on the Central Wales Line at least once. Tech specs in Alt.
Hoping for clear skies later so we can add a new #SolarEclipse photo to our collection.
Like this one that Tom Kent took 114 years ago of a solar eclipse over Kirkwall #Orkney in April 1912.
Taken 2 days after the sinking of the Titanic.
Archives are amazing. ❤️
I was always more interested in building the ground than playing.
Fun fact, the name came about after the inventor was told he couldn't trademark "The Hobby". So he went for part of the Latin name of the Hobby (Falco Subbuteo) instead.
Right about now (BDST) W/C L.E. Healy, the AAEAF armaments officer, received a call from the Air Ministry reminding him that the 1000 lb bomb had not been cleared for use on the Hawker Typhoon. Healy replied with one of the finest memos of WW2.
RCAF Typhoons had dropped 48 of them that morning.
Demonstrating the appeal of the Kato mini diorama kits with a Farish Class 03 and a motley selection of wagons (spot the Thomas and Friends Minis body on a Peco chassis!)
I’m also reminded of the Ron Funches quote: “Raising a child is like taking care of someone who’s on way too many shrooms, while you yourself are on a moderate amount of shrooms. I am not confident in my decisions, but I know you should not be eating a mousepad.”
If chemistry is performed incorrectly, it may become physics.
If it's performed very incorrectly it may result in geography, and become history.
Turning biology into physics or geography is generally considered to be in poor taste.
Sorry, your two vast and trunkless legs of stone sound more like an archaeology thing. We can take the pedestal though but the colossal wreck, boundless and bare should probably remain in situ.
Happy International Dark Sky Week! 🌌
When was the last time you remember standing under a truly dark sky? Have you ever?
The Milky Way has been lost to over a third of humanity. We’ve scrubbed it from the skies with light pollution.
