I don't mean to constantly be begging but my girlfriend's car completely shit the bed last week, and even with working overtime hours I can really only get 3/4ths of the repairs paid for, we're about $500 short right now no obligation to give but it would help us a lot venmo.com/code?user_id...

These stupid "I love working!!" Quizzes for job applications are bad, but how often they crash is even worse. It sucks so much everything is so horrible now

Why do video games these days take up so many resources? Because outside of Japan, everyone making your game is an inexperienced 25 year old. Everyone else has already been burned out by the industry/wants to settle down and not have to move for a new job every few years.

I feel really guilty about this obviously, but at the same time, if the massive uncaring weight of the world has a superweapon, the best way to fight it is with one of my own.

I'm job searching and it sucks because literally everywhere is just using AI to scream applications (I'll get rejections in a matter of half an hour)

some real "the games industry is not a meritocracy and never was" feelings about the last couple of days in terms of who is still being paid to make games and write articles vs. the ppl i know who have been out of a job for almost half a decade

We raised our expectations of Matilda to one gold egg a month, she unfortunately did not achieve that goal. The farmer says one gold egg a year is the most realistic and sustainable pace. So today weโ€™re gutting Matilda. We know the gold eggs are in there somewhere.

I love it when videogames are like, oh, you want to pause during a cutscene? No, i don't think so. Watch it right now this second or lose it And then your game console is like lmao do not listen to that at all. Pause away. Do what you need to do.

Games looking like movies is a bad thing actually, because movies look like that for the atmosphere, and videogames need to have visuals that help you understand functionality, things that are important are supposed to stand out visually, not just look like any other hyper realistic asset

the american flag represents everything bad about america (colonialism, sports betting, rampant racism, florida, etc.) the american flag bikini represents everything good about america (sideshows, publicly booing your elected representatives, hoagies, etc.)

This lesson is super important outside of game design too. For an audience who knows the topic, sketches drive conversation. For an adjacent audience, you need it to look nice or they will spend their time correcting your fonts so they feel like theyโ€™re contributing.

Jonathan Tweet@jonathantweet.bsky.social

At Wizards, we learned from painful experience that the game designers in R&D could look at sketches and diagrams and evaluate a game proposal without it looking nice. Everyone from other departments needed the game proposal to look nice or else they'd get caught up critiquing the visuals.

System designers define the verbs and content/level designers create the nouns, and if they're not working with narrative then the story and gameplay are going to feel like awkward roommates instead of two parts of a whole.

Raquel de Miranda@rdemiranda.bsky.social

In short: narrative designers are game designers!!!!! They have basically the same needs as system designers and level designers in order to work effectively. Trying to model their involvement after game writers' typical involvement in a game production (also flawed) is, imo, a big mistake!!

the worst coffee in the world thinks a water-killing machine can design even worse coffee for you

Starbucks is partnering with ChatGPT. The coffee giant has launched an app within the OpenAI chatbot that is supposed to "provide inspiration for customersโ€™ drink orders." Consumers will still need to complete their orders on the Starbucks app or website.

I love ALIENโ€™s vision of the future. Yes, everyone is still working shit jobs for shit corporations for shit pay. But the good news is theyโ€™ve successfully made robots full of milk that are bitchy little fruits

"restored to the way the developers originally intended it" / "remastered to the style the devs envisioned but wasn't technically possible at the time" is a fantasy There is no platonic ideal. Every game is constructed out of the choices its developers made. Changing that makes it a different game

What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

I think we need to celebrate the death of Sora a bit more. This is a technology that, just MONTHS AGO, we were being told was going to literally destroy Hollywood and Disney was going to give them a BILLION DOLLARS and NONE OF THAT EVEN REMOTELY HAPPENED
