I should probably talk about the game itself - when I say you manage mutant crops, I mean it. There's mechanics for them attacking each other, or mutating into different crops (which you may or may not actually want happening, depending on what contracts you have). (1/4)

Cancermantis Creations@cancermantis.bsky.social

Been working on a game about managing mutant crops in a distant post apocalypse to pay off treatment costs for excessive-cryostasis, and I got my first piece of character art put together this past week: Dr.* Shelly! (more art to follow) *not actually licensed #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #indiedev

I wish I was exaggerating, 16 games from one dev, all AI slop, all clones of something else, all pumped out in the space of months. That's my experience of what AI tools are enabling, not creativity, not anyone's dream game, but spam. Constant, low effort, neverending, AI generated spam.

using it anywhere (yes, even code) is an instant signal to the kind of person you are. the kind of shit you’re willing to sweep under the rug in the name of personal convenience. it’s entirely irrelevant how good AI is at a task

Absolutely craven, defeatist attitude. I am not using any LLM to write any code, ever. Can I guarantee that not a single piece of the multiple dozens of software - programs, libraries, etc - i use don’t have any such code? No, regardless of efforts to do so since it’s not mine. But!

Micah@rincewind.run

yeah, I think this is a good place to draw the line - replacing human artists with the machine is bad but the ship has one hundred percent sailed on the code side

I am not writing any. If you know that a developer used LLMs in *any* capacity, and you still buy the game, that’s not an “inevitability,” not something you had to do. Not even something you have to do to still have new games to play. It’s a choice you made when there are abundant alternatives

15 years ago when Apocalypse World was new and people were beginning to understand and work with it, it was seductive to look at "acting under fire" and see, not one basic move of several, but the template underlying all the game's moves. Like @kierongillen.bsky.social 's classic gag:

These things really bother me because games journalists are always saying they're pro-union. Well, Japan's game industry doesn't has mass layoffs because of the work of labor unions! Of strikes! But here we are, rewriting that history into "Japanese CEOs are nicer". Kill the neoliberal inside you.

Note that these type of allegations are levied at black writers and students more often than other people.

Ellipsus@ellipsus.com

Pangram once again being weaponized to damage careers without checks or balances 🤦 This is a very harmful trend for writers. AI verifiers should *not* be allowed to decide questions of human authorship (especially when their errors and biases are so well documented!) shorturl.at/lLBiy

Hello folks, its been a bit for CAIN stuff but I figured: its been a bit since Weeping Mountain came out and we oughta celebrate that. It's very close to having either 21 000 view or 10 000 downloads, and if it gets there then my goal is to run a fun little contest for folks.

So it's useful to talk about the specific ways in which this argument is dishonest because I think a lot of liberal and left-leaning people are very vulnerable to this rhetorical bludgeon—the idea that you should "listen to experts". But let's unpack what exactly Giggies here means by "experts".

"I already boycott The New York Times/don't have a subscription, what can I do?" A lot! You can: * Share our call for boycott. Tell others about the NYT's role in trans genocide * Stop sharing NYT links, even to dunk on them * Pressure the pension/retirement funds invested in the NYT to divest

Trans News Network@transnews.network

"If trans people want a boycott of The New York Times, where's the call to do so?" Here is a declaration laying out how the NYT is a key driver of trans genocide, why boycotts work and why anyone who gives a damn about trans lives and rights must boycott The New York Times.

This is making me think of the practice of perpetual sales in clothing stores, where prices are hiked up to sell things “on sale” at what would be a more… honest(?) price so people feel like they got a good deal. Iirc, stores that made a point of not doing that would perform worse and scrap it?

nige 'dear ratboy'@niall.codes

Everyone with the extension sees a note showing your game's lowest past price, so once you go to a certain price, a chunk of people will never buy your game unless it's that cheap or cheaper. This turns discounts into a way of progressively cutting off more and more of your own leg to pay the rent.

Got a first-pass moving on from the block out animation. Went through a whole process of feeling good about it, doing a little more work and feeling really bad, and then realizing all the spikes in the animation graph were probably why it was looking so janky. Cleaned things up a bit and here it is

I'd also just meant to tweak a couple things and then post, and somehow that's two hours gone. I learned something at least, but damn, I might need to print this and stick it on my monitor as a reminder

When it feels like things just aren't going right, sometimes you just gotta start making mechs. Maybe just me, idk. The idea is a quick melee type, with accessories including what'll essentially be big brass knuckles. And maybe a scarf. I like it when the person who punches stuff has a flowy scarf

a lot of folks are reposting this because it appears nice at a glance but between the claude folder in the website and bizarre coding style of the unreal plugin, at least, it's reasonable to assume this is slop until proven otherwise imo

Ian Thomas@wildwinter.bsky.social

I've made a new dialogue system. It's open source, has a friendly editor, and runs on Unreal, Unity, Javascript, and Godot. You can find it at patterkit.dev And I've written too much text about it over here: medium.com/@wildwinter/...

I have seen some takes that “it’s a big project, there’s nothing they can reasonably do to ban it” and honestly that’s just false. You can just ban it. Maybe you’re not able to perfectly enforce it, but you can make an effort. It’s not like contributions don’t already need to be reviewed anyway. 1/3

Rémi Verschelde@akien.bsky.social

The above policy leaves some room for interpretation, so maintainers often discuss internally how to deal with a given AI-assisted PR. We've been working on a more detailed AI policy for some time, which will be published soon. It's a bit more restrictive, but not strictly a blanket ban.

“But people would just try to hide it” - a trend in LLM use is degradation of persistence. Even if you’re not fully “vibe coding,” taking away the tool hurts your motivation to do the work. So adding an extra challenge of needing to hide your LLM use seems like it’d be a fine deterrent, actually.2/2

Well. This is incredibly frustrating.

Yuri@yurisizov.bsky.social

Unreal quadrupling down on AI? Well, if you're considering Godot, keep in mind that the last version that was not made with AI contributions was 4.5. You can perhaps extend some courtesy to 4.6, but 4.7 openly includes AI-generated code and LLM-assisted changes. Do with this info what you will.

I’d made two batches of pecan scone dough to use up some excess sourdough discard leftover from another recipe. One still sits in the freezer, awaiting its destined time. The second is shown here, which I feel came out nicely! If perhaps *slightly* over-baked, to compensate for freezing the dough

First time baking scones, actually. I’d heard they’d bake from frozen well so they seemed ideal at the time for something I didn’t have to fully commit to finishing all at once (in the sense of baking or eating them, they’re supposedly good for a couple days and 16 would be too much, even with help)

Cancermantis Creations reposted

Big standouts to me: 1. inability to re-use solutions, just re-implement slightly-different functions each time a problem arises 2. code complexity only ever increases 3. lots of begging the LLM to behave, which of course it cannot because it is a statistical machine incapable of cognition.
