the routine, pay for play pardons are all by themselves one of the worst corruption scandals in american history!

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

My brain cannot process this level of corruption. She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee." And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/u...

Still thinking about yesteryear, which probably means it was well done, even though I was disgusted a bit. I just wasn’t the right audience - the whole influencer lifestyle is gross and unethical and distasteful, but it’s not a world I know. So I didn’t start off with a high level of anger.

I think if you do have a lot of anger at that crowd, maybe it’s easier to get on board to laugh and cheer at the comeuppance and torture of Natalie - an awful character in a book full of them.

The other aspect that I think encouraged the reader reaction to Natalie was Burke’s assertion that she actually hated her children. But that never read real to me. It struck me as kicking the dog. Or the kind of thing in real life we ascribe too easily to anyone we disagree with.

100% this. In the late 90s when my team (Cleveland) was great for a while, I remember thinking in April that baseball really didn’t matter until the postseason. That’s a terrible way to live. In 2026 I just enjoyed a beautiful long pennant race. The playoffs aren’t real.

Exactly wrong. Trump has embraced and dialed up all of the worst and most dangerous aspects of the “war on terror”—including the bellicosity, the bigotry, and the theory of executive power. Trump isn’t moving on; he’s doubling down.

Extraordinary, powerful and heart-wrenching. Active duty Marine Colonel Zach Schmidt, speaking in his personal capacity, about Khalil, an Afghan national whose family helped U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Khalil was deported by the U.S. on Friday to a conflict zone.

You cannot go a week without these two falsehoods popping up in the ‘discourse.’ Add it to the Dems silenced me/us during covid claim especially popular with tech bros.

I wish pundits offered evidence to support the cliche that “Democratic candidates…got carried away with pronouns and identity politics” or that liberals sometimes direct “condescension…toward working-class Americans.” As it happens, the only example Kristof offers of such condescension is his own.

Do the math, folks. This would be more than $5 trillion PER YEAR And instead of this money giving us Medicare for all, reducing grocery prices or making housing affordable, we get insane health insurance premiums, more expensive food, and evictions Plus measles and ICE shooting people 78 days

The federal budget deficit for July was $432 billion. That's not the total for the first 7 months. That is JUST THE MONTH OF JULY. That's the largest monthly deficit in US history. It is even larger than during the height of the pandemic when US government spending was keeping the economy alfoat.

There could not be a more blatant violation of the Hatch Act, which prohibits any executive branch employee from "Using his or her official title while participating in political activity." Unlikely to be prosecuted, however. Will any news org even mention this? www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/5/7...

I’m on vacation but I gotta say, as much fun as it is to debate woke1 and Hasan Piker, the Trump administration is currently engaged in mass murder on the high seas as surely as any serial killer or lynch mob. And viewed from the distance of vacation, The Discourse doesn’t seem to give a shit.

We had fun with the crazy soapy teen mess of Sterling Point. Really good performances. Had to laugh at the adults in the show. There’s only 3! And their role is to make the most batshit insane choices at every turn to setup the teens’ reactions.

“I’ve shown up to the Club 20 debate every time I’ve run for elected office,” Weiser wrote in a statement about the debate. “The challenges facing rural Colorado and the Western Slope are serious, and it’s critically important that our next governor listens to every community." #philforgovernor

Even if you assume everything Sean Pond’s wife is saying is true…it is insane to me that this guy is offering political advice and serving as county commissioner while being so ignorant of, and too conceited to look up, how the law works. There’s nothing actionable here, not even close.

Kyle Clark@kylec.bsky.social

The GoFundMe features a message from Pond's wife Danielle. "Sean will be the tip of the spear in this legal fight. He will put his name and reputation on the line and lead the way through attorneys and the courts," it reads. "If 1,000 people put in $100, we can begin."

If it looks like an Amazon delivery and drives like an Amazon delivery, then it's an Amazon delivery, right? Not according to Amazon. Big companies like Amazon have built a vast network of subcontractors who deliver their packages while shielding them from accountability.

Still thinking about Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar several days later, which obviously is a testament to how strong it is. It is beautifully written and has no shortage of wonderful observations. But … (mild spoilers ahead)…

I’m also angry and confused, just as the protagonist is. There was a monster in this book. It was a curious trick by the author - you think this is about martyrdom but nah, just “every day” suicide. The kind that has devastated so many, including me. And I think it got shorted by the author here.
