Bluesky is a "liberal bubble" because fascist chuds can't get traction without algorithmic assistance and because people here trained themselves to block "debate me" trybois the instant they roll up

The Verge@theverge.com

Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

Bluesky oldheads will remember that brief period of time when the conservative trolls tried to storm the place and were flummoxed by the idea they would have to organically grow an audience and that someone who didn't want to talk to them could nuke every interaction they ever had from orbit

Yeah but then the conservatives/bots just switched strategies to blaming the Democrats in the comments of every post and that seems to have worked out for them.

My profile literally says 🚫Blocking is my passion project🚫 😂 The block lists were a thing of beauty. A whole package of "No the fuck I will not engage with you."

They hate Will Stancil because he was able to build a Bsky presence and gets to annoy the people they want to annoy

Elders, sir. We are Elders and not Oldheads. Though I would prefer to wear an Oldheads t-shirt than one that said Elders. OK. You win.

Yeah, I use blocks generously every day. I know I'm not alone. "Nuke from orbit!" I like that. I only noticed recently that NPR articles were being carpet-bombed with tired "tone trolling". I've taken to calling it out; if they try to push back, I hide their replies and block them.

We're not afraid we are just tired, like when an ADHD toddler keeps telling you the same story or showing you the same toy over and over again after a long day at work, but without the inherent endearing qualities of an actual child you love and care about

It was deeply satisfying to block nearly every federal department in less than ten minutes last fall when they all set up Bluesky accounts at once. (Not the @cpsc.gov , though; they were here earlier!)

German right-wingers/trolls/fascists tried again a few months ago. They all got blocked so hard, they left with their tails between their legs.

Lol, I remember one of these chuds who was obviously trying to goad people here. His bio had something like "Here for genuine debate. If you block me, you're showing I'm morally and intellectually superior to you." "Cool, enjoy your superiority, babe" thought I, as I hit Block.

“If you block me it proves that circles are indeed squares. This is a mere taste of the irrational patterns of thought you will drive yourself crazy trying to untangle if you do decide to debate me.”

It's a win-win situation all around. They get to enjoy their "intellectual superiority" and I don't even need to think about them ever again 😊

Remember when the Trump Administration tried to flood the place and we blocked them and they more or less gave up?

I keep thinking of the end of the duel in the Shindig episode of Firefly: "You’ll have to rely on your winning personality to get women. God help you."

I love that the CEO says "it wasn't designed to attract one kind of person." Like, my brother in design principles, you DID design it to REPEL one(chuds), though, which ENABLES the rise of the the other (normies/liberals). I’m not sure he understands that design *intentionally* has consequences 🤷

Oh please, he understands it better than you do! Social-media systems get intense political flak from both sides. BlueSky's moderation screens out trolls; the trolls hate that, but they can't point to the system being biased against them because of political bias.

He says what he means a minute after that -- that Bluesky was intended to be for people talking about more than only politics (sports, for example, but there's a million other topics). "More than one kind of person" means you don't have to know anything about the Michigan primary to post here :D

Yeah isn’t this just… supporting what he’s saying? They’re not trying to keep conservatives off Bluesky, they’re trying to make it impossible for fascists to take over Super different goals

Thwy didn't want the nazi site to be an exclusive club for nazi speech & ideology. They wanted it to be a place where they could mock & harrass anti-nazis with impunity and force them to take it. Being a nazi is no fun without someone to kick around.

I unsubscribed from most of my block lists recently and haven't noticed a difference. Seems like those guys all left and just never came back. Hopefully nothing happens that makes me want to resubscribe.

I’ve built a few lists. The main one being a priority list of writers and thinkers I admire who provide good content. The only users I can’t control are commenters, but that’s fine too. That’s my role here as well. If anyone annoys me too much I mute or block. Pretty simple.

I sometimes reply “you realize this doesn’t work like Twitter - you can’t monetize rage bait, an algorithm doesn’t promote you and adding you to shared mass block lists that anyone can access is just super fun”. Then I block them and book them.

This is why it's extremely important to curate your feed ☺️ I follow some ppl I disagree with some or even most of the time, simply because they're intelligent and _argue in good faith_. As a result, I've had many interactions where we ended still not agreeing on a point, but without it being toxic

I also remember how after like 8 months of everyone moving to Bluesky, we started seeing right-wingers on twitter complaining that twitter wasn't fun anymore, because they had no one left to argue with but people who were stupider and crazier than they were.

"Maoist bubble". Please. bsky.app/profile/idio...

What Americans actually want, aka #mainstream policies: The right to #abortion [85%, Gallup 2024] Equal pay for #women. [77%, Pew Research, 2023] Stronger protection of the #environment [74%, Gallup, 2018] Legalized #cannabis [88%, Pew, 2023]

I don't think anyone uses it but i still block almost entirely through my own lists so others can also block entire batches of people if they trust my judgement :p but some of the popular banlists fast tracked the traction vaccum those fucks were allowed to get.. Aside from topping the ban charts :p

Noooo! I left the sewer called X, precisely because I wanted a calmer, less aggressive and more polite home (I know, I know, Bluesky has its moments too). Leave the haters to X, and leave us alone.

When people complain about left-wing dogpiles, they should remember that they have all the same tools that the rest of us used to shut down right-wing dogpiles. I suspect a lot of them are worried that it would hurt engagement.

I’m not sure why a ‘social media’ CEO would want to welcome the liars, the corrupted, the disinformation spreaders[,] and victim blamers and then wonder why normal people buggered off elsewhere. It isn’t ‘balance’, it is the normalisation of criminal thoughts and deeds as just political difference.

No-one can appease these folk. Some aren’t even human, but bots run by Evil-as-a-Service. Others are only corrupt for the money. Hypocrites are never sated.

If a critical mass of conservatives joined they could all post to each other, there's nothing systematic that says Bluesky is for the libs. Their network of connections might even intersect with others' through their non-political posts. But they're happy where they are, why would they bother?

If, on the other hand, they want people who have to listen to them and can't say no, then Bluesky is infelicitous. Which might be a hint if lots of people were not completely invested in their right to impose themselves on others.

Conservatives can go to Twitter if all they want is an echo chamber. Most conservatives nowadays aren’t interested in good-faith conversations. What they really want is to inflict misery onto others—and they’re upset that we block instead of taking the bait. Bsky shouldn’t be courting trolls.

John: it’s always amazing to me when someone pastes the word “liberal” on anyone or anything demonstrating logic, common sense, reasoned thought, grasp of grammar and a sense of civility. One has to wonder why anyone would want to “change” that? They want to recreate twitter?

Being on Bluesky is like finally getting to have adult conversations after the kids have gone to bed and aren't constantly interrupting and demanding attention. If that's because its a liberal bubble, I hope it stays one.

If by “liberal bubble” that means a place where analytical people that aren’t complete assholes and work towards a collective good for everyone…then I guess I’m in the right place 🤷🏻‍♂️ A place where accountability exists and is valued. Where crypto-fascist pornbots are frowned upon. Guilty I guess.

I need to block and mute more cause there are some mean people when you don’t agree with them. I get put on all these weird list from people I don’t even interact with.

Which tells you precisely what the illiberal crowd feasts upon. They starve without victims, reactions, gaslighting, a captive audience, and being centered. They sure are telling on themselves.

That and the two-party system has broken Americans’ brains so much that they can’t see the vaaaasssstttt intellectual diversity that exists on the spectrum from party-line moderate Dem to anarchist prison abolitionist

I left Twitter to follow the radical left on bluesky such as Bill Kristol, Jen Rubin, Adam Kinzinger, David Frum, Sarah Longwell, Amanda Carpenter, Judge Luttig, David French…. Real bomb throwers.

Kind of more like a bubble of truth and constructive debate versus one of trolling, disingenuous people armed only with right wing talking points. You can be right wing and post here but we will debate your bs. Up to them if they can handle it.

Still that's a bit worrying. Reads like Bluesky's CEO might be considering exempting Conservative Influencers from blocks, or something else equally stupid.

"But do you feel your bar is* too* safe for women? Without attracting a certain number of rapists, aren't you worried that it will simply be an echo chamber for anti-rape sentiment?"

BlueSky is an example of what happens when you actually stop feeding the trolls. When you simply refuse to engage with their juvenile tactics and rage baiting, they fall silent pretty fast.

videos are rife with trolls and bots. any article about your lawn is popups that prevent you from reading the article followed by scammy enquirer posts. I have a limited on line presence, I can't imagine all the junk that is on the internet...infested with malware. we need apps for this.

Wanting equitable opportunities, healthcare, bodily rights, childcare, affordability, and education for all people; basically all the things enjoyed by all other wealthy countries isn't liberal. Nor is it communism or socialism. It's just being a decent human.

I block pretty much everything i don't like.. racists, zionists, fascists, etc.. i can accept bad news, unfortunately that's the world we live in, but i don't want too see truths not lies, peopaganda and hate. If bluesky becomes X.. then we better be there

Yep. ‘X’ taught me to block early, block often, when it comes to assholes/bigots/racists/trolls/etc. They thrive on engagement, ragebait algorithms, and platforms that protect them from consequences.

1) "If you want respect for your ideas, bring better ideas." 2) When people are willing to talk honestly, that would help, but when "conservatives" act as if honesty and decency (also legality) were four-letter words (and not the ones they use), then finding playmates is going to be...difficult.

The Verge team should be lambasted for taking this one snippet of a long interview where the CEO literally says what you’re saying but went for maximum bait. And, wow, so many people falling for it rather than listening to/reading the whole interview.

Looks like the start to this implementation is how suddenly every 4th post in the feed is some sports thing. My block finger is gonna be tired.

The fact is, getting rid of the idiots who start the same shit they try on X is literally the best move, don't dunk on them, don't waste time trying to debate them because they made it clear they are not interested in changing, just block, report and move on.

I don’t want it to change. I already know how hateful the right is. I don’t need them joining to add chaos. We need liberal bubbles for our sanity.

So the knuckledraggers & mouthbreathers who aren't here yet should be, and the reason they need to be is...why exactly? Are they more likely to pay for premium services? Does their presence generate more ad revenue? Do third-party data clients prefer their post & reply content?

For me the best part is when I read somebody complain about some big "fascist chud" I completely missed, just to then discover it was already blocked by some curated "fascist chuds blocklist".

Also it is rather simple to understand that the people who want to escape a platform run by what is at the most generous a nazi cosplayer are left leaning.

The both sides nonsense gets a lot of my blocks. Anyone still saying democrats are the same as republicans is well, I just don't care if they are bots, trolls, or really somehow, still believe that. We are well past the time when it makes sense to give that the benefit of the doubt.

He's a vulture capitalist. He thinks he can Big Tent the Right Wing into Bsky without... His current base of users getting up and going elsewhere. If anything, the exodus from Elonville showed there is a market for the next one if this gets fucked up.

This whole conservative movement of "I should be allowed to spit my vemon everywhere" is a core foundation of how Trump 2 happened and should be rejected on a fundamental level. Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences. Words carry weight.

No. Please leave us alone. I don’t want to see another “X”. I left there and all the Meta platforms because of the ugliness, lack of concern for complaints/“cloning” issues and the constant tracking and advertising.

Wikipedia had the same effect: people who tried to cause right-wing trouble got shut out of the process. I got banned from Facebook for a week for congratulating a flat earther on having discovered sidereal time. If the CEO of BS starts to inflict right wingers on me, I will leave.

I assume the same standard is bring applied by MAGA and conservatives to Truth Social, Fox, and other right-wing outlets. Obviously, they are working very hard to include more center and left thinking!

The "public square" in my town would be overwhelmingly Blue. I like it that way. I'm very aware of MAGA opinions and don't need to hear it from them. I live in my location for a reason and I'm on Bluesky for similar reasons.

What sort of divergent opinions are you looking for? You should be able to tune your Following feed to give you a variety. Find people whose opinions you find interesting, then look through who they follow or who else follows them.

At first glance you will mostly see agreement because people tend to share and repost things that they agree with. There isn’t the same sort of algorithmic feed as the big social media sites, so what you see is dictated by the accounts you follow. You need to do some legwork to diversify your feed.

I've long suspected, "Yes, we definitely want that to change," is prob true and what I find workable in bluesky is not what the owners intended or want and will disappear if they ever really get a firm grip on their biz. Gotta cherish it as it is now, while I can.

I also suspect that the "debate me" bros run into real policy types here. Stancil acts as Jupiter in attracting most of the detritus with his gravitational mass. I suspect it's actually worse for those who don't run into him. He's remarkably civil, polite, and patient by policy standards.

The bsky devs hate their userbase so much it's unreal. They wanted an app to talk to their fellow techbros and then the furry porn artists and Discord transexuals got invites and ruined it for them forever. I love it

I came to BlueSky after quitting twitter. The constant borage of porn bots, right wing lunatics and people DMing for money was sickening. If BlueSky wants to replicate Musk then I won’t be sticking around. (PS, did that guy just come out of a coma? Right wing doesn’t want discussion 🤷🏻‍♀️)

What he meant was: BlueSky is an investment opportunity that will provide enormous returns to early investors, and ought therefore to be particularly attractive to wealthy and politically aware ("liberal") gentlemen. It is a liberal bubble! Open your pocketbooks!

If Bluesky starts amplifying right wing content and using Algos to promote it I move onto the fence on staying with Blusky. If right wing content becomes ubiquitous I'm leaving Right wing content is livable. Amplifying it, prioritizing its spread, allowing misinformation & lies to run wild is not

I'm pretty sure of it. Social media systems get a lot of flak from FARTs, including politicians, if they're claimed to be prejudiced against them. The moderation tools in BlueSky are presented as "neutral", though by design they are down on trolls.

Bluesky management likes the community here just fine. They don't like that the people who aren't here, claim it's a liberal bubble and full of isolationist cliques. And even if they don't mind that, they are not going to tell the media "really the only people who don't like us are fascists."

Twitter and X were fucked the moment they wanted to make money on hate. Blue works because normal people can talk about a host of topic’s with a variety of individuals. And when someone comes to attack, they can just be turned off. There is one common link, we all think Trump sucks and is a pedo

@plante.bsky.social didnt u used to work over there? go educate some people about how stupid they are please. pull some strings. contact some contacts. people need to know they look like fucking dipshits and why.

Don't care what others want Bluesky to do. I love the lack of algorithmic nudging that makes me see controversial crap that generates reaction without me looking for that. Love the ignore/block features. I decide what I see, and if I decide I don't want to see something, I won't see it anymore. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Fascists, like boomers (and there is significant overlap), believe they are entitled to other people's attention, and cutting them off is a violation of their "free speech". It's part of why boomers must have the last word, and go apeshit if you block them before they can get it.
