My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I'll say it again, one of the worst things this rampant push to cram "generative AI" into everything has done is make people suspect bright kids of cheating when they're just nerdy or bookish or neurodivergent, sanding down their unique edges to fit into people's lowered, homogenized expectations.

…The thing about "Generative AI" is that it takes all those racialized, gendered, ableist assumptions about skills, intelligence, capability, & it feeds on them as data which then become outputs of "AI Detectors,"which in turn become what people think of as so-called "tell tale signs of AI writing"…
