Been a lot of talk here about "punk" lately, which we've been staying out of, bc we don't really fit in that world. But we are bringing some "punk" to Elyria, OH, in about 3 weeks; doing a show there, supported by 2 different punk bands of friends: HAMS + Lorain Skum. That'll have to do.

Just watched the highlights of this race on the #NASCAR channel on YouTube. It's a wild one; with some narrow escapes + some very brutal...not-escapes. Finish was wild, too; but also cleanly fought among 4 (!) drivers. Well worth a watch.

The article tap-dances around why (of course). The ODP statewide is an ineffectual mess; + its branch in Greater CLE is an old political "machine" with 60% of its parts stripped out + junked. When ordinary ppl have no effective "voice" in a party anymore, they just stop showing up for it.

Hi, shag is doing his "side job" tonight, working with The Rick Ray Band playing Rick's unique brand of psychedelic prog, at the Maple Grove Tavern in Maple Hts. OH, just south of Cleveland. 10 bucks cheap, just like our shows; they play late so stop by if you're rolling out tonight.

Marching Band was a big part of my HS life and I enjoyed it. Good thread about the implications of defending music education

Gonna risk sounding overly earnest + dorky here; but if you have one of these around your area in the US, + you love live music (even the heavy stuff), you'd do well to support shows like this while you can.🧵

In this, the future of rock n' roll bands + marching bands are intertwined, as well as the future of all live music. Your next generation is on those fields, whumping out the Anthem + the "fight songs", + hopefully, catching the bug.

So please consider supporting your local marching bands, while they last. Go to stuff, buy their merch (should they have some), help keep them alive. They're a pipeline we can't afford to lose entirely. Thanks. 🧵

Anyway, high school marching bands are sort of an endangered species these days; declining enrollments, funding cuts, the increasing fragmentation of schooling in general; + music education in particular, mean fewer kids get their start there than before.

We can already see this through the "drummer shortage" that affects all genres of rock + metal music. Drummers are nearly harder to find than singers now. In 10 years, it may be even harder.

The marching band was often their first real taste of regular performance, as well as consistent group practice, + many first extracurricular rock bands formed in friend-groups made in the bleachers + on the busses.

Most of those early bands barely survived to graduation, of course; but a few of their members "caught the bug" there, + it never left them. They may have left the trumpet or sousaphone behind, but the identity of "musician" became permanent.

It's a fact not often brought up that a substantial portion of rock + metal bands across all genres have members who started with music as kids in school band. Drummers in particular are often born + raised in those bandrooms, tapping clapped-out snare drums + toms.

As you dabble in this aesthetic, pay attention to how you feel. A lot of clothing ends up in landfills not because they bear some material defect, but because the person didn't feel good in the clothes. Thus, pay attention to what I call "emotional durability." dieworkwear.com/2020/08/01/o...

As bands, we tend to develop a thick skin; some people just refuse to be pleased + are happy to tell us so. We accept that most of our efforts get wasted, punted into the void, due to accidents of timing or format or discourse-weather. No use fussin' about it, just learn + go again

Perhaps the Advice Givers could learn a thing like that from their "students", + acknowledge where those folks are really at in 2026. Because it ain't 1983, or 1995, or even 2002. It might even make the Givers happier people, too. 🪔🧵

It's not the intention to send them into paroxysms, there are more direct ways for that one uses when no discussion is worth having. Truth be told, musicians work harder today than they ever did in days of yore, on every aspect of existing in the art today. They have to, to exist at all. And...

...they get less in return for their efforts than ever before. It's just how we live now. The things done + lengths gone to by only the very most ambitious bands in 1985-96, are the minimum to be seen + heard now. Like ducks, even the most serene floating hides a mad paddling beneath the surface.

...they address their own audiences with stereotypes, tales twice-told, overheard from label bosses in 1983. As if anyone could afford to be the stereotypical druggy-lewd menace that was said to be afoot in those days, in this economy. Those days might as well be the Age Of Fishes, compared to now.

Anyway, any amount of pushback on this misalignment, however gently phrased, seems to make them explode with ceramic-landmine intensity; as if one had stolen their shoe-lifts and insulted their cat. Given the predominant demo-derby style of commentary bluntness on apps these days, it's surprising.

There's something about the "lazy entitled musician" trope that they just cannot leave behind; even tho' that species has been functionally extinct since the Year of Exile (2020-21), + critically endangered for at least 15 years before that.

You'd think they'd know better, interacting as they do (allegedly) with rosters of active, hard-charging artists rolling up ground in an otherwise unfriendly environment on a daily/weekly basis, and yet...
