Yup. There isn't even a good definition of so-called "ultraprocessed food". Don't say NOVA, because that's just hand-wavy bullshit.

Timothy Caulfield@caulfieldtim.bsky.social

The science & politics behind the panic over ultraprocessed foods theconversation.com/the-science-... "...the very definition of ultraprocessed is highly contested." "...scientists remain unconvinced that processing alone can explain why certain foods are associated with poor health."

Reminds me of a joke I heard circa 1980: MIT graduates will be the scientists and engineers who build the future. And Stanford grads will be their bosses.

Oxford people think they own the world. Cambridge people do not care who owns the world Was this saying coined by the English editor James Payn, the Bishop of London Mandell Creighton, the romance novelist Helen Ricker Beebe, or someone else? quoteinvestigator.com/2026/10/24/o...

Funny how much overlap there is in the Venn diagram of COVID denialism and sociopathic authoritarianism. Almost as if willingness to sacrifice the lives of others for one's own convenience correlates with willingness to sacrifice the rights of others for one's own convenience. 🤔

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

This week, NIH advisors rebuked RFK for harming #NIH and US science. Sheryl Gay Stolberg reported it. Then RFK posted calling her sources anonymous or corrupt. I'll say this hoping it does good: I'm an NIH scientist, I'm not anonymous, and RFK Jr is destroying NIH. More in attachment:

This may be a good time to remind people that documentaries are *never* objective presentations of reality. They *all* manipulate the viewer. That's because cinema's one job, the only one it must do, is to convey emotions. The technical term for a film that fails to convey emotions is "boring".

Films are stories, whether presented as documentaries or not. Never forget that. I've seen two great ones recently. They tell great stories. Because that is their job. "Predators" "You Can See Everything" Both highly recommended. Both tell stories. Neither is objective truth.

Imagine there are children who are starving. You are from a wealthy country and you decide to exploit those conditions to conduct a study of what happens when you withhold food from kids. You divide them into two groups. One group gets fed immediately. The other has to wait 3 weeks for food.

BMI is a hack that's marginally useful if you're studying populations. It is worse than useless for individuals. Just ignore your BMI. You have a range of healthy weights. In general you want to be toward the lean end of that range, but it *is* a range.

Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social

The cutoff of a BMI of 25 as defining the difference between “normal weight” and “overweight” and thus magically conferring health risks is not valid for the entire population, and it ignores a number of key contributions to overall health, such access to healthcare and financial resources.

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.
