Man City: The Abu Dhabi government paid Etihad, we knew nothing. Etihad: We are not funded by the Abu Dhabi government. Also Etihad: we will sue the Premier league for accusations that we are funded by the Abu Dhabi government. 😂😂😂

If the UAE is really threatening billions over Manchester City, that’s exactly the kind of political influence that demands scrutiny. When wealth and power get special access, ordinary people deserve accountability.

Hard agree!!!

I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

Remember, it’s perfectly acceptable if your weekend plans consist of nothing other than reading a good book, drinking multiple cups of tea, and indulging in a scandalous amount of chocolate croissants.

I would love to ask a prominent BBC journalist to give me an example of an illegitimate concern. Is seems to me that it has become a question not of fact, logic, or ethics but of volume. If a big enough proportion of a village was anxious about Bigfoot or Chemtrails, BBC would cover it in a way...

I think we're at the point where we can incredibly comfortably say that your attitude towards Reform, Restore, MAGA, the AfD etc is how you'd have responded to fascism in the 1930s

Coops reposted

It does give Reform's "enemies" a frame, too: Reform is on the side of the crypto criminals – both Delo and "posh George" – who are paying its bills. Accepting major contributions from one convicted criminal looks unfortunate. Two looks like carelessness.

Peter Whitewood@pwhitewood.bsky.social

It’s not only the absurdity of a billionaire funding a campaign against the ‘establishment’, but Reform increasingly frames politics as a permanent struggle against the enemy.

I'm not sure I will ever forgive Starmer's government for their rank cowardice in not addressing electoral reform and party funding reform.

Reform is the richest party in Britain. Its leaders are almost all millionaires. It is funded almost exclusively by billionaires. It has a supportive TV station and widespread media backing. So naturally, this donation comes with the usual attack on "elites". www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Ed Miliband’s parents survived the Holocaust, Ed Miliband is Jewish - that is immutable Questioning his Jewishness like this tells you all you need to know about people like this, and what their values are - and what they truly think about Jewish people that don’t behave how they want them to

Ryan Bridge - Founder of "Raise the Colours" flag protests - charged with 14 offences including common assault. Danny Thomas - ringleader of Dover/Portsmouth thuggery - an ex-con jailed for attempted kidnap at knifepoint. Almost like they're not "ordinary people with concerns" but criminals.

This should be the easiest open goal in the world for a progressive government - they are literally violent criminals. Most voters do not like violent criminals.

If someone acts on their 'concerns' by attacking people in their homes and by biting and throwing rocks at cops, no one should assess if those concerns are 'legitimate' or not. That violent behaviour waives any claim to 'legitimacy'. The phrase comes across as justifying violence, not condeming it.

The media will never “learn” because it has no interest in learning - it is doing what it is meant to do. Don’t consider that what was done to Jason Arday will lead to “lessons being learned” - it is not what the model exists for

Dolly Parton sent free books to the girls when they were being fostered. The first book I ever read to them was one she had helped pay for. May perpetual light shine upon her.

First family snap from new season’s Bake Off!! It starts on Channel 4 in September, though I haven’t got an exact date to give you yet. As soon as I know, I’ll tell you. (And I have no info on timings for other territories, I’m afraid.) I couldn’t be happier!

The press needs urgent reform and an inquiry into all aspects of its behaviour including Leveson 2 needs to happen now. Journalists focusing on academia right now are just desperate blame shifting.

As usual, some great insights from Steve. Very much worth a read.

Steve Peers@stevepeers.bsky.social

Ok, some thoughts, as an olde tyme academic, on the Arday tragedy. First, allegations about causes. We don't know what was in his mind, but many people are keen to blame him, or woke lefties/academia, or the media. Some people are absolutely certain that the media are faultless. 1/
