I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
544 buses stopped in Bahia! Only one bus per line on the streets of Teresina, a capital with a population of almost a million! Metro stoppages in São Paulo with no replacement buses! No buses in São Gonçalo, a city in the state of Rio governed by the far-right!
"The director won’t protect even our most respected analysts when they tell hard truths, so they stopped telling them and learned to avoid topics the White House didn’t want to hear,” newly retired CIA official tells @shaneharris.bsky.socialwww.theatlantic.com/national-sec...
our institutions have stopped hiring, we've been telling students not to pursue advanced study, and to the extent that humanists have mounted a defence, it's been by pleading our utility as an adjunct of STEM disciplines and professional schools
in short, it all worked
We literally have the largest bike-touring event in the world which has been an annual summer state tradition for FIFTY YEARS. There's a giant exhibit in the state historical museum about it. This is comical.

“Kushner’s counsel, however, said Kushner did not make any agreements or arrangements with leaders or officials in foreign countries that were not agreed to by the President of the United States and in the best interests of the United States.”
I don’t know, maybe we should simply not have a 24/7/365 surveillance system that allows users to search retroactively as far back as the data exists
Because if we have that tool it will be abused
New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force.
One used it for five years after retirement, tracking his wife during a custody battle.
Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy.

I did not think I was still capable of being shocked. This is one of those hypotheticals we use to illustrate the absurdity of a given position. Surely this must be against the law — that this is against the law is part of what makes the law, law.
My brain cannot process this level of corruption.
She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee."
And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money.

In 1991 a guy named George Holliday filmed some BTS footage of the T2 scene where Arnold arrives in the present - they were filming near his house and he just went out with his camcorder. A few hours later he saw cops pull a guy out of his car, and filmed the beating of Rodney King on the same tape.
We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting?
For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.
Duop Reath and Drew Timme are great vibes signings. Yeah, they both have significant holes in their games but as end of the bench bigs and practice squad guys they’re great.
And hey, Timme just played 27 good minutes in a Timberwolves preseason game, so who knows?
Transactions ahead of today's deadline to finalize opening night NBA rosters:
🏀PHX: waived K. Brea, CJ Huntley, converted D. Reath to two-way contract, claimed D. Timme and converted him to two-way contract
🏀SAC: waived A. Flagler

Zacharia: "A lot of the misinformation, miscommunication is around the fact that I labeled myself a lawyer. I consulted for a long time many people in the field -- 'Is it ok if I label myself a lawyer?' -- and they said, 'Absolutely. You can call yourself a lawyer. You have a JD'"
And hey, some of my favorite people aren’t lawyers.
Some people make the choice not to take the Bar, or take it, practice for a time, and then resign their membership, because the practice of law is a famously miserable and degenerate habit.
But no Bar card, no calling yourself a lawyer.

Jimmy Carter sold his peanut farm to avoid the appearance of bias or interest.
Our political culture is in a lot of trouble that Republicans aren’t safer calling this out than ignoring or defending it.
El-Sayed: "When Mike Rogers was in Congress, he literally told somebody from the stand, 'If you don't know your privacy is being violated, is it really being violated?' It's like the peeping tom vote you're going after."
AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP.
Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down.
"AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago.
We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.
Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.
The first two categories are expressly unconstitutional. Coker v. Georgia (1977) and Kennedy v. Louisiana (2008) forbid the death penalty for any non-homicide offense under the 8th Amendment
Of course, SCOTUS gonna SCOTUS…
Trump: "We will pass the death penalty for large scale drug dealers, human traffickers, and anybody who ever kills a police officer or law enforcement official"
ICE just spent $16.7 million arming agents with shock gloves—wearable devices that deliver a painful electric shock. Human rights organizations like Amnesty International say the gloves “could be readily misused for torture.”

If you’ve read about TN this week, please take a moment with this piece if you didn’t read it when we published it:
It’s an investigation into the execution team Alabama has put together.
It’s officers with a history of violence who choose each other. Eye-opening to what happens in executions.
How much does it cost to get more information about a cop who punched someone in the face? If you guessed anything lower than $2.5 million, you’d be wrong — at least according to the city of Eugene, Oregon.

The last couple of years I’ve been thinking a lot (and talking a bit) about how indigent defense is like trauma medicine.
Dr. El-Sayed is speaking to one of the parallels here.
There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
And this system is totally incompetent to speak to, let alone to treat, that pain.
Our system is designed to protect rights and liberty and sometimes dignity. And treating pain as currency can conflict with that.
But that is no excuse for illiteracy with respect to pain. Numbness to it.

In our work, our clients are almost always in tremendous pain. They fear future pain - shame, failure, imprisonment, deprivation, violence, uncertainty. If they did what they are accused of, they likely feel great pain about what they did. And if they didn’t do it? Woof…
And almost every complaining witness is a nexus of pain. Many witnesses, too.
I wonder why rates of domestic violence are so high among cops and substance abuse so high among lawyers.
Filing reports from the "GoPDX" PAC show the direct link between the business-led United for Portland PAC and a trio of new independent expenditures (GoPDX, Ditch Mitch & fix multco).
These are the PACs behind a grip of billboards bashing Councilor Green / supporting Commissioner Brim-Edwards.

The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers.

AI might do horrible damage to the world. If it does, the most likely mechanism is that the economic bubble(s) surrounding the tech will burst, erasing billions or trillions in artificial assets after a decade of inflating hardware costs and wasted software development cycles.
Fidelity’s Director of Global Macro saying that the AI trade has been “dead money” for three months, and that it’s inflationary, meaning (as I’ve discussed multiple times) that the more debt they raise the more expensive debt becomes and the more they build data centers the more expensive it gets
I’ve been doing a thorough review of Tupac’s work this week, having missed most of his production when I was a kid.
His bangers-per-track rate over the four albums published before his death is maybe unbeatable.
Every groove is sick. Every line is delivered like a punch in a round-long combo.
As Tupac Shakur's murderer awaits sentencing, let's revisit the rapper's enduring legacy, which was so much more than his untimely death.
In his short life, he helped define West Coast hip-hop through vulnerable, introspective lyrics and Black power politics.
get ready to cyber bully your legislators that restoring and expanding bus service is a nonnegotiable component of a 2027 transportation package. It won’t happen unless we annoy the crap out of them with untold hundreds of angry constituents blowing up their inboxes and phone lines
As I wait on a busy road for a bus that is perpetually coming in 12 minutes I’m just reminded how the city of Portland, the county of Multnomah, the regional Metro, and the State of Oregon really don’t give a shit about anyone who isn’t in a car.
It’s obvious, shameful, and inexcusable.
