Incredible words from Zelenskyy, a leader who uses honesty as a weapon. What a stark contrast to an American president who treats it as an obstacle. History will remember the difference. Slava Ukraini!

I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

Remember the South Park episode where they stopped refugees from time traveling back to South Park by creating a better present? That’s exactly how building the future works.

Important message for anyone who doesn't want to spend all their time online being annoyed. That's not a life. No one wants that.

Lot of folks (self included) expressing despair that despite aggressive prosecuting fascists ("doing everything right") Brazil was still going to get Bolsonaro-ed and the fact this guy gtfo-ed as quickly as he did should be a big signal for the AOC DOJ to go *hard* in 2029.

No, they were middle-aged men wearing powdered wigs, elaborately embroidered hostess jackets, silk hose, and shoes with enormous buckles and substantial heels. In other words, our Constitution was written and signed by drag queens.

If still debating whether Donald Trump or Elon Musk willfully crippled Ukraine's missile defense, helping to slay innocent civilians, you are a rube. If the U.S. President had no role, then an oligarch governs national security. If not, the U.S. President serves Russia. Both answers are mortifying.

Yes, it's *absolutely* like scam emails. And they're generated by people who aren't readers themselves, otherwise they'd know better than to do this. Like unironically trying to sell a colour-by-numbers book page covered in crayon in an art gallery.

Relatedly, what does it mean for a model or a theory to be successful? Most people claim prediction is enough. But is empirical fit really everything we want and also all it's cracked up to be? Can you answer that for your own work if you work with models?

I'm excited to share this preprint by my wonderful MSc student Yihsin who's thought deeply about how psychological & neurocognitive theories relate to different types of evidence. Beyond Empirical Success: Evaluating Theoretical Virtue Across the Computational Modeling Chain doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

First, automation is not what you think! No system which is automated has within it machines or processes that require no human oversight. Automation is actually not what you seem to think if you think the OP statements. It may be time to engage with psychological research in this area!

all of this has always been about getting back at the uppity women who wouldn’t fuck them

“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men. We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”

The best part of Suleyman's essay calls out Anthropic's circular logic, as others have done (Ted Chiang's most recent piece comes to mind). Train a model with 'what if AI will develop interests, claim rights, or even do crimes?' and you will get a model that capably plays the part. Basically this:

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

If we're going to have a new, good internet, a post-American internet that truly disenshittifies America's defective tech exports and replaces them with robust, transparent digital public goods, we need to make reverse-engineering legal again.

We need to repeal the law that bans jailbreaking iPhones, so that a would-be alternative app store can raise capital and pay programmers and tech support staff and salespeople to assemble rival catalogs of software and help customers figure out how to get up their phones to use it.

We already have flying cars. They're called helicopters. They're really expensive and there are good reasons you have to have a pilot license and work with air traffic control to fly them. Putting jets on a sedan is not going to result in a better vehicle or transportation experience in any way.
