“Cyclists are often perceived as recklessly flaunting road laws. A new study challenges this perception. The study found only 5% of cyclists broke road rules while riding on bike infrastructure versus 66% of motorists who broke rules while driving.” Safe bike infrastructure fuels rule-following.

Davis was a pioneer in adding bike facilities, but it layered them on to auto-oriented zoning that includes strict minimum parking mandates & bans apartments on most land. The resulting housing shortage and parking surplus pushed many workers into long-distance car commutes from other cities.

Had a great talk about my book last night in Davis. One thing I've heard from riders who live in places like Davis—famous for being one of the best biking cities in the US—is that progress has slowed or stopped and they almost wish they weren't held up as a gold standard.

Maybe we can quit taking all that deextinction noise seriously and treat them like all the other tech companies that lied to credulous VC funders for 5 years and after failing to develop the product they were promising ran to the safety govt contracts

PSA: For anyone writing a recommendation for the NSF grad fellowship this year, recs are due on Fri Oct 16, 8pm Eastern, cleverly *before* the actual application deadline. This tidbit isn't on the NSFGRF front page anymore; it's buried inside the program solicitation:

To start with, this is happening because the president has targeted a member of Congress as part of a broader explicitly racist hate campaign against Americans of a particular ethnic origin. There's no other way to put it.

Obligatory UC Davis mentioned but also what’s the lore on Pittsburgh here? Ok, thought about it, I actually would rather not know

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."

Over time we evolved to a system where students simultaneously compete for admission while institutions compete over enrollment. What has this competition done to benefit either party?

Often, corporate practices that steal time and money from workers and consumers are designed to push the limit of prohibited practices. We will equip New Yorkers with new tools to take on predatory companies, bad landlords, scammers, and other actors who exploit them.
