Another example of #OpenAI lying for its IPO, like #AGI #AILaunch etc. "OpenAI said it led a coalition of researchers that discovered the flaw and claimed “frontier AI” had been key. The researchers who found the weakness, however, said they used models available to the public."

Note: these are mathematicians destroying mathematics while using AI. Yes, I know the pressure on those untenured, but if the tenured continued as before the pressure wouldn't be so bad. E INVECE 😭😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I don’t actually understand what Terence Tao says or wants here. The sentence you quote is preceded by “Problem solving is not a destination but a journey, and lessons learned along the way are often more important than the answer itself”, which seems to me in direct contradiction with it. 🤷‍♂️

"Rather than solving a single problem on their own, they can use A.I. to solve 10 problems and find new patterns and more questions to ask." @aeporreca.org @barbarafantechi.bsky.social Is he saying that the way to clean up an oil spill from an oil tanker is “more of the same”? archive.ph/bid95

As a mathematician who has published papers for 35+ years, I know that at the core of mathematics is not "problems being solved", that all of the dumped worked is terribly written and shamelessly lacking in references, and that part of it definitely wrong.

We propose an alternative approach for resisting AI hype: contestation: disorganizing institutional alignment around AI & building collective power to pursue alternative futures. We suggest tactics that AI opponents can use to undermine hypers' legitimacy + build collective political agency.

ADHD is disabling & esp so for us who can't take meds. On this, there's something a bit upsetting when people insist it's a superpower *just* because they are impressed by the output. Do they see us as a machine or a chatbot which has value because of the nature of the output? Feels dehumanising.

JAIL THEM

Hagen Blix@hagenblix.bsky.social

We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe

There is a strong interest in using grants to buy more tokens. Many people have said that they get more research value in tokens than students: turning down a department-funded PhD studentship in exchange for tokens is surprisingly popular; replacing PDRAs with tokens on grants too.

All we can expect when trying to scale up AI systems is diminishing returns and devastating environmental damage. Calls for `slowing down’ can conveniently hide the diminishing returns, while still convincing people that the tech is “all powerful”.
