Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

First Orban, now Vučić. Both fundamentally undone by rank corruption of their regimes. Which is so often the reality of the authoritarian right in power. Really worth paying heed to in Western Europe right now

Peter Geoghegan@petergeoghegan.bsky.social

Wow. Vučić has conceded Serbian election. Massive moment for the entire Balkans

Getting v bored with bs people putting the boot into something that was v funny for a lot of people 25 years ago to justify hating something they have not yet seen but think they will hate because they are 25 years older and wiser. Hindsight is a glorious thing.

has anyone actually seen the ali g movie yet or is all the discourse just about the vague notion of ali g in 2026

We were too spineless to regulate these billionaire freaks, so now one of them gets to decide whether Ukrainian drones can catch the missiles aimed at Ukrainian kids. We have failed spectacularly.

Deeply upset to read this. The emboldenment is the result of years of attrition by the usual sections of the press suspects and right-wing nut jobs who are widening the net.

Trump’s a Russian asset, Farage’s party is a racist enterprise, Putin wanted Brexit & if you tried to make a list of all the UK politicians & pundits who’ve backed all three, you’d be here for hours.

Good piece and increasingly evident that this bit is true. There's a route to 40%+ for Labour if they adopt a strong pro-EU message at next election and unite most of the left. Burnham's not overly scary to Home County Lib Dems and many Greens will return to Labour fold.

This a million times. People of colour being dragged on to debate maniacs about imaginary labels & race science is an abomination. proper ‘how German are you’ Nazi shit Note that people like me with white migrant parentage never asked to defend our identity Englishness. Is. A. Made. Up. Thing

Sathnam Sanghera@sathnam.bsky.social

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

I got seconded to the Kings Cross Partnerhip briefly in 1997 pre-redevelopment. By every metric it was a shithole - a lively shithole - but a shithole enough to get EU & gov funding.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

I get the appeal of nostalgia, I really do, but I find it specifically funny to get a leaflet from Reform's candidate talking about how when he was in the Met 31 years ago, he would never have dreamed of lawlessness like the kind we now see in Kings Cross.

Since Braverman does not identify as English, its strange for her to insist that she could define for others the rules of an in group that she does not believe she can ever be a member of *and* to believe her intuition should trump a broad sustained consemsus amomg those who do identify as English!

The Brexiters are now put in the position of defending Brexit, when most of them have long since disowned it, called it a failure, said that it was "done wrongly", etc. They have no case at this point. Most of them gave up long ago and try not to mention Brexit any more.

Sadly these probable 90% self-professed Christians are also unimaginable sadists. And sadism wins again and again. There is no place for execution in civil society.

Mahmood's rationale remains the same. Fewer (legal, working) migrants => less racism Nothing to do with integration. No evidence. I'd add this *doesn't* show she hates immigrants (FTAOD don't think she does). It shows her contempt/distrust/fear of ordinary Brits.

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

An exchange with Lewis Atkinson MP over whether the anxieties of those who don't know what rules/timelines they will face is bad for integration. The Home Secretary does not think so, on the grounds that the numbers of people who came in (and who are in that position) was high ...

A deep-dive poll published by Le Monde on 14 Sept - the first in a series – gives a fascinating picture of France seven months before the most significant presidential election in its post-war history. Alarming?  Reassuring? A little of both…but mostly alarming. 1/

At this point hoping Venezuela pulls off a switcheroo type heist.

They never will through shame and further rightward drift. Any party member who would take ownership has left the party. Trotters up, so to speak. Instead you have bigger idiots arguing for more of the same.

And yet Helen Whately had an elite education via Westminster School, Oxford University, barely pausing before being hired by McKinsey. Where along this path did she warp so badly? Wtaf is going on in her brain?

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

Helen Whately on Sky News: "We want to bring down the tax burden on working people. Kemi has asked her economic unit for a fiscally responsible way to bring down inheritance tax, another tax that hits hard working people hard." One of the dumbest people in politics. Liz Truss levels of stupid.

This is a tax guy. His advice could be the difference between someone having their assets seized & maybe going to jail, or not. Now imagine having to worry about racist shit in every interaction you have with any person in authority. Every doctor & nurse, every cop, every lawyer & judge, every boss
