Welsh Devolution: latest (grim) ‘jagged edge’ news on criminal (in)justice in Wales from my excellent colleague @robdjones.bsky.social

"Wales is the only common law country in the world to have a government and a parliament, but not its own justice system and what that leaves Wales with is an anomalous, complicated, and highly complex system." - Dr @robdjones.bsky.social (full story story below 👇)

Great to see this out! @jaclarner.bsky.social @danielwincott.bsky.social and I found that national identity responds to referendums. The effect was temporary after the Scottish referendum, but post-Brexit the identity gap between Remain and Leave voters has grown considerably over time. 🧵

Delighted to see this paper out in the wild. Diolch yn fawr to the editors @bjpols.bsky.social to our anonymous referees and, especially, to my fantastic co-authors @jamesdgriffiths.bsky.social and @jaclarner.bsky.social

Should be essential reading for Andy Burnham. The UK gov forcing devolution from the Senedd to 22 local authorities would be constitutionally reckless and illiterate AND counterproductive for Burnham’s policy aims.

@waterslee.bsky.social acknowledges Welsh Labour’s failures on local gov structures in Wales. And the centrality of effective local gov for effective public services. He also suggests a ‘deal’ Burnham could offer to break this deadlock. Can Burnham grapple with devo realities beyond his slogans?

Nerdy observation from the various UK legislatures: they each call the period between one election and another something different. Westminster = a Parliament. Scotland = a Session. Wales = an Assembly. NI = a Mandate.

I think also, intelligence is neither here nor there. Some intelligent people believe in horoscopes, and there is about as much accidental truth in that as there is in race science.

Quick lunchtime look at www.theguardian.com/society/ng-i... I wonder whether this is so gender-specific. Women may also have poorly-recognised unprocessed grief over failed cultural promises - with more social pressure to find compensators via children & caring

Let’s not forget about the failure of universities. Ever since I was targeted by the Daily Express in 2017 as a result of doing my job I have been asking my university how they are going to protect me and almost a decade later the response is still woefully inadequate. They have no answer.

In his 60s my late father moved to South Northamptonshire near Banbury. He was hospitalised under the Oxfordshire Mental Health Trust in his mid-60s. When he turned 65 he was transferred to hospital in Northampton. The reason? Adult & geriatric services seemed to have different geographic footings.

Worth noting the stress placed by securocrats on hitting a target % of GDP for spending on defence as the marker of how seriously threats to the state are taken. Are they thinking about what UK break-up might mean for deep-water ports (Faslane, Milford Haven)?

I can understand the sense of urgency around defence spending, but there seem to me to be good reasons for securocrats to bother about social cohesion and econ growth just now. And to think about these matters & security in post UK context. A big % of small, slowly growing economy isn’t everything.

The break up of the UK is not ‘unthinkable’ for all three First Ministers currently in office across the state. Mark Drakeford has been deeply committed to the Union, but his vision is of a voluntary union of nations. Only parochially metropolitan folk can still call break up ‘unthinkable’.

Public figures in Wales, NI, Scotland thinking the unthinkable: the break up fo the UK in the event of a Nigel Farage government We wouldn't want to be left with a rump English nationalist state - says Mark Drakeford. Unionists think Farage could endanger them www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Marion Kozak’s work on the ‘80s National Childcare Campaign & then Daycare Trust deserves the widest possible acknowledgement & celebration. Fed into Labour’s late 90s National Childcare Strategy and the Sure Start. Cameron ‘s Coalition deliberately destroyed Sure Start: a deeply regressive move.

This post is unavailable.

The WEN report discusses a wide range of policies and policy experiments, including Sure Start in England. (Now largely abandoned) Sure Start has some potentially valuable positive lessons for a Welsh Government looking to develop childcare - and tackle poverty. 2/2

Sarah Pochin MP has highlighted something which is unfortunately very true - football tournaments are always associated with a big increase in domestic violence. Absolutely nothing to do with the team - but very much to do with the culture that surrounds supporting the national team.

The planned meeting between Rhun ap Iorwerth and Keir Starmer will not take place in June as originally planned. The pair had been planning to meet to discuss potential constitutional changes for Wales. I understand that the Welsh Gov put forward several dates but the PM was unable to make them.

It’s a grim not-so-merry-go-round for students trying to find their way in super-massive cohorts. @sylviademars.me point that many students using AI to get a 52 could do much better by not taking the shortcut lands hard with me. But 2.2 is a long way providing a smooth path to a legal career. Or 1/3

Colin Murray@colinmurray.bsky.social

A thread for marking season. The ability to sustain a researched, organised and coherent argument over a couple of thousand words is still the bedrock skill being developed across the humanities. When we are being asked to ditch the essay in assessment, we're losing the point of what we're doing.

a good ‘graduate job’ for the wider humanities/social sciences. I don’t delude myself about higher scoring students use of LLMs. I take some comfort from the fact that their use doesn’t (yet?) fabricate 2.1/1 marks for longer essays. My experience is of a good spread of marks this year. 2/3

And better performing students are still doing something different. If we could only persuade the 52ers that cognitive effort is needed for 2.1+, whatever tools you use. Racking up debt for a low 2.2 grim. It also feeds a corrupted and unsustainable HE financing arrangements. 3/3

Potentially a very big deal. Changing the Westminster electoral system would fundamentally change our politics. Lesson from other countries is also that once FPP has been ditched it is unlikely to be brought back.
