Final version of the map made for Christmas! I think it looks pretty good.

Very rough draft of a BRT network diagram based on the alignments released today in a public engagement survey by the city. stop locations are my addition but I think they make sense

The active transportation implementation guide for the next budget cycle was released. We will see a shift from rapid expansion to more targeted projects in line with road/neighbourhood renewal. As well as some upgrades to substandard routes and increased winter maintenance. #yegbike

Every week I learn about a new position that Americans for some reason think an election and not a job interview should be held to fill

The California Insurance Commissioner’s choices affect every homeowner and driver in the state. Jane Kim is an incompetent political climber who would blow up California’s already-in-crisis insurance market if elected. It is VITALLY IMPORTANT that every Californian vote for Ben Allen.

I can say that I am utterly devastated to see the results of the “other nine” questions. The scapegoating of newcomers is about to get a lot worse and that is a loss for all Albertans and Canadians.

We don’t need an “election day” Only like 18% of people actually voted on Monday, with most voting in advance Just open up polling stations for a week and make mail voting easier

Blake Shaffer 🇨🇦@blakeshaffer.bsky.social

Interesting breakdown. Vote split by voting type. Remain were motivated to vote early with mail-in (special ballots) and avoid the polling station headaches (which, surprisingly, were few). 91% remain there. Election day is tighter. Could mean we tighten a bit as vote count rises.

“People who live amongst immigrants are more likely to be ok with them” rule wins out again

No to the Nine resonated pretty strongly in Alberta's two big cities. Different story outside them. The urban/rural/small cities split remains a feature of our province.

Heads up! This is a thread - more like a library/compendium - of my columns, speeches & podcasts about Alberta's referendum questions. I thought it might be useful if I gathered it all in one place, organized by time and topic. #Alberta #notothenine #abpoli #cdnpoli

Alberta’s UCP government — also known for randomly turning into a semi-separatist party — is crushing and stomping on what was easily the most exciting city in Canada for housing reform.

Edmonton adopted a harsh policy of removing encampments a few years ago, while Calgary did not. A study of the first year following that shift found a five-fold increase in emergency amputations in Edmonton over previous years with no change in Calgary's rate.

ProPublica@propublica.org

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

My belated #yegdt hot take is that it actually isn't that bad. It has problems, but they're long-running ones that go back decades. Claims that it's broken are very overwrought, and worth a side-eye; it's generally been getting better. And no, it's not because of the hockey thingy. 1/lots w/ maps!

I will forever be an “urban LRT” hater, but goddamn it’s gonna be so cool to have a tram through Downtown, Wihkwentowin, and Stony Plain Rd

Observing The City@observingthecity.ca

I made a tool where you can draw boundaries around the sections of the city you would want to live in. Then see a heatmap of responses that can be filtered by responses from within the city and outside of the city.

Cause most plans aren’t actually meant to be implemented, just look nice on a shelf

One of the most baffling things I read in planning grad school was the People’s Plan For South LA, which called for “protecting” industrial and manufacturing zoning to keep jobs, then *in the next paragraph* bemoaned the pollution from those same industrial uses. www.unidad-la.org/wp-content/u...

I took a 10 minute Lime ride today to go shopping and it cost me over $7 I want a publicly owned bike share system in Edmonton so bad

Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social

I love bike share. What an amazing idea. You take a bike wherever and whenever you want. And leave it wherever you want. It’s not the fastest or most fitted bike to you. But it’s incredible flexibility. Bike to transit and not worry about theft. Go for a run and bike back. See rain, take a bike.

Mill Woods Road is really the centerpiece of this pilot, which would actually be great if it had any bike infrastructure whatsoever, or at least wasn’t insanely wide

This explains the new e-bike and scooter parking at the Meadows arc centre. Will see how many I see parked there on my bike rides City brings shared e-scooters, e-bikes to Mill Woods with pilot project www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/art...

Sidewalk parking and not being able to find bikes consistently is a big problem for bike share People riding on neighbourhood roads is definitely not This pilot I think goes too far in trying to keep people on inadequate infrastructure, when all it should do is make sure people park in corrals

Someone ask her what she thinks about the police response to the pro-Palestine encampments at the UofA and UofC campuses

If it was really about ‘catching up’ they would have made the changes needed already This is all only a win for people who don’t want immigration or more housing

Kevin Wilson@kwilsonhfx.bsky.social

This was something a lot of housing advocates saw coming a mile away when the immigration cuts were announced. The fundamental stance of Canadian cities is that they prefer high prices to building housing. They love high prices. Easing off immigration was never going to change that.

I do think we have to very carefully guard against unequal enforcement and brutalizations of homeless people But tolerating ‘disorder’ rather than accepting it as an issue and proactively and compassionately addressing it just means that the right will come in and brutalize people all they want

Performative tolerance of urban crime and public disorder is Gen X gentrifier behavior.

😢

Michael DeMoor@michaeldemoor.bsky.social

About 6 or 7 years ago the city produced a report and held public consultations about “daylighting” mill creek. The last few hundred metres of the creek had been diverted through a culvert decades ago in preparation for a freeway that (thankfully) never got built. Those plans were abandoned …

The fact that even though we kept some of the worst projects at bay, we’ve still lost an immeasurable amount of our best creeks to car-infrastructure makes me really upset I will never say some infrastructure in the Valley isn’t necessary, but not in our creeks

Edmonton continues to show it's possible to have newly built, ground-oriented housing for families in existing neighbourhoods at a reasonable price. You only have to make it legal and feasible. Here's a 3bed for $1,895 with a $500 lease signing bonus.
