So, PA gets proscribed tout suite, and a balaclava clad, uniformly dressed group openly calling for a mob to go to a police station to "free" a knife-using criminal suspect, after blockading ports and terrorising members of the RNLI, are still acting openly on social media. Mahmood, where are you?

Book 14 - Matthew Sayed Black Box Thinking. Very interesting reading looking at differences in approaches to failure between medicine and aviation and other areas. Great chapter exploring cognitive dissonance and why people double down on bad ideas #booksky

Book 13 - The King’s Curse by Philippa Gregory. A really enjoyable historical fiction from the perspective of Margaret Pole, the Countess of Salisbury. Some interesting parallels with modern times - a king to whom everyone is afraid of telling the truth, which just increases his delusions. #booksky

A lot of media coverage of the β€˜AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.

Book 8The Big Short by Michael Lewis β€œThe big Wall Street firms…had somehow become the dumb money. The people who ran them did not understand their own businesses, and their regulators obviously knew even less.” #booksky

Developed vetting is tough but not really difficult to pass successfully. The key questions should be why Mandelson had his failure ignored and, possibly more importantly, how many other people in government now and in recent years also failed as potential security risks but were waived through.

I'm pretty sure I know. They aren't. We're not going to really be able to make a lot of progress in dealing with the implications of this tech unless and until we get rid of all this "woo-woo" talk about LLMs. Anthropic pushing this line is PR, unserious.

🧡I've posted previously about how institutional capture by disordered discourse works, and I want to highlight this post from DOD Rapid Response to show what it looks like in action, and what it tells us. It’s a textbook example of Stage 5: Entrenchment & Epistemic Closure. bsky.app/profile/elio...

Eliot Higgins@eliothiggins.bsky.social

Let’s start with a critical point: Not all disordered discourse leads to institutional capture. Some narratives, like Flat Earth or Bigfoot conspiracies, remain fringe, self-contained, and irrelevant to policy. But others infiltrate formal institutions, and that’s where the danger escalates.

One grotty truth of real world cybersecurity is that once a network has been breached by a hostile actor, you need to rebuild, test, and re-commission it from a known-good foundation, which always turns out to be way lower level than anybody wants to think. 1/?
