Yes, pretty excited about this!

📢 Coming in 2027: Anglo-Saxon England 📢 Rediscover Anglo-Saxon England. Featuring spectacular jewellery, weapons and treasures alongside the latest archaeological discoveries and research, this exhibition will shed new light on England's origins.

All of this AI discourse keeps making me think about David Graeber on how most jobs involve a lot of caring labour, but it’s convenient to think of them as purely productive/in the service of capitalism - and then they can be replaced by technological change. (from Bullshit Jobs)

It’s hard to decide what part of this story on Marissa Mayer’s new startup is most loathsome, but this “women need a wife or, in other words, a digital servant” construction makes me want to flip over an actual table www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/s...

Today the Church of England commemorates Alfred the Great (to my surprise! 😂) As I have a Tuesday service rather than one on Monday, we'll commemorate him tomorrow - his love of learning, alms to Rome, translation of texts into English, and baptism of Guthrum. www.ashmolean.org/alfred-jewel

But why? Why?? It’s not like there is a shortage of books to read.

Adam Keiper@adamkeiper.com

The algorithm delivered me an ad tonight for an AI service that "writes" entire books for you. The ad copy reads: "One idea in, a finished novel out. Plot, chapters and cover included." I assume the insides of the books are as shitty as these sample covers. (Check out esp. the cat and the watch.)

In other words it's not just that there are few academic jobs for humanists in the academy; it’s also that the academic jobs that exist are mostly bad in the sense that you have to struggle against the institution to have any semblance of intellectual life you thought the job was supposed to provide

Currently writing about this kind of imagery in the early Middle Ages - Paul calls himself ‘nutrix’ (nurse) and whether that meant a wet-nurse or mother was a matter of some debate

Catherine Clarke@cathamclarke.bsky.social

For anyone wanting to read this extraordinary medieval prayer, which addresses 'Christ, my mother' and 'Lord God... the great mother' 👇 When human gender is applied to God, it is always a metaphor, and so always fluid and open to rich new reimaginings. aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2012/06/anse...

We all see where this is headed right? Or where it already is: reading flagged by the AI censorship tool included ‘materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people)’

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

Last week I wrote about how Texas politicians’ “free speech” campaign has led to a campaign of academic censorship in the state’s universities that exceeds even the McCarthy era (🎁🔗) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

Working in the public sector this is exactly how I think things are going. Someone writes a bullet list of stuff. They ask AI to turn it into a lengthy report for a committee. The committee members ask AI to turn the report into an easier to read bullet list. Chinese whispers happens in between.

Dear #PublicHistory people: I am teaching a class, very last minute, on public history and am looking for a #PublicHistorian who is open to talk to my class (in person/over zoom) about their practical experiences - on the 28th of October. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!!

On the eve of the anniversary of the #BattleOfHastings, I am delighted to obtain the new & timely edition of this important book. Effectively the catalogue of 1 of the best exhibitions I have seen in recent years, @britishlibrary.bsky.social. Scholarly, detailed, lavishly illustrated

RIP Chris Wickham. Unlike so many historians who emphasise particularities and contingencies, he was the master of constructing grand, coherent, beautifully rendered worlds out of his evidence. This, from his 2021 Past and Present essay, is a masterpiece of historical writing.

So terrible to hear about the death of Chris Wickham. One of the greatest medieval historians, a clear political commitment, a strong support to younger scholars (myself included), and just a kind and warm person.

Charles West@pseudo-isidore.bsky.social

The passing of Chris Wickham is hard to take in. Few have made a bigger contribution to their field, with such personal warmth. He's going to be missed by a lot of people.

When I was learning to be a medievalist in Oxford, Chris Wickham and Mark Whittow convened the weekly Medieval History seminar. It was such a big deal to me when they later invited me to speak there. I just can’t comprehend that they’re both gone.
