it’s possible I’ve been added to a starter pack. Hello new followers! I am a philosopher with additional training in theology and religious studies. I teach Christian spirituality at a Jesuit university. I comment frequently on Catholicism, politics, law, ethics, and science.

Yesterday’s hearing was such a wild ride that at one point, a colleague in the media room threw up his hands and exclaimed, “What else could happen??” We’ll find out soon. The hearing resumes at 9 a.m. ET. I’ll be covering it all for @lawfaremedia.org. Follow along! 🧵🧵🧵⬇️👇

COMING UP: Preliminary hearing before magistrate judge Faruqui in the criminal case of former FBI agents charged with false statements to Congress and obstruction. Things could get very interesting... I'm here in the media room for @lawfaremedia.org. Follow along!

The entirety of our lives, including & explicitly the political realm, has been wholly captured by the economic realm. This realm of unpredictable futures being made together in mutual solidarity has been completely subsumed by the idea of yielding predictable results that yield a profit. #IRUS26

In his new book, 'The Accessorized Bible,' philosopher David Dault looks not only at how the Bible has shaped our thought, but how we use it, tailoring it to fit our tastes and “accessorizing” it to suit our desires, including our desires for violence.

A 56-year-old Mexican man held at a federal immigration facility in Laredo was found dead in his cell Saturday morning. His family says the center would not give him medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He is the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year.

Sen. Angus King says he sat down and made a list of everything Putin could possibly want from an American president. His conclusion about Trump? “This guy, this president, is doing almost all of them.” King then goes through the list. WATCH.

worth also noting that both the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti happened in her district, and on top of the obviously racist targeting of her personally this is also an attempt to deny the people of Minneapolis their democratically elected representative

Things got more insane just about as soon as I posted this last night. DHS is now arguing that we cannot even put the names of ICE officers in our lawsuit against those officers. Their position is that, if a defendant works for DHS, they cannot be named in a lawsuit. Never seen anything like it.

Jared@jaredmcclain.bsky.social

It's been a struggle for reporters to get DHS to provide the names of officers who violate people's civil rights. Now, in our case against DHS's construction-site raids, the government is arguing in court that its employees names are "confidential" and should not be made public during litigation.

It's not even hypocrisy on their terms, they're being totally consistent within their own worldview. For right-wingers it's trivially obvious one would privilege the in-group while harming and depriving the outgroup, that's the thing they believe in.

Feels like we're experiencing the rise of vice signal marketing, where there are two target audiences: the fascists who hear the dogwhistle and love it, and the oppressed and antifascists who recognize it and are outraged. The outrage then becomes marketing too.

As a long, long, long, long, long time Converse buyer, I will never buy a Converse product ever again. I am sick of the virtue signalling to racists. I see this and I see a man hanged, a white robe that could be a klansman's robe and light shaped like a KKK hat. What the actual hell!?!

Here's a gift link to my 9/11 essay in the NYT. Civil libertarians long warned that before giving government new powers, we should consider how an administration with authoritarian ambition might abuse them. We were told that America was too exceptional to elect such a person. Well here we are.

Debating the "existence" of God: -pointless -boring -antithetical to a religion based on faith itself Debating whether or not communion by intinction is simply a variation on "chips and salsa" -invigorating -a bold new frontier for discourse -you get drunk the more you do it

Writing is going much better today. Two pages (versus the two paragraphs I was able to get done yesterday). I’ve ended up researching and writing more about the Gregorian Reforms of the 11th century than I would have imagined possible.

New York City’s business elites are long accustomed to direct access to City Hall, where even Democratic mayors felt the need to court the city’s wealthiest and most influential corporate leaders. That access is getting shredded by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

[nods] Funny way of saying the DSA runs competent candidates, and mainline Dems don’t, but here we are

I know we are chalking the success of some leftist candidates almost entirely to the DSA. However, it seems like the more common theme is that these are candidates with organizing experience?
