I got a mail flyer from a group trying to tell me that a wealth tax would be bad. By saying that billionaires will leave California. But since billionaires are one of the worst things to ever happen to this planet, ... Good? They should be taxed or forced to leave from everywhere

I thought of a great new slogan/catch-phrase for The HOA: "Wash this space."

Remap Radio@remapradio.bsky.social

On the latest HOA, Patrick is plunged into a social anxiety nightmare when his usual repair guy does the opposite of a repair to a washer. Meanwhile, Rob finds another use case for his fancy power washer: washing his cars! https://remapradio.com/podcasts/episodes/hoa-washed/

it's stupid to make human shaped factory robots. inefficient. within the auto industry, there's a reason the welding machines aren't a human arm holding a welding torch. these fools just want humanoid robots so they can replace human workers without the cost of rebuilding their facilities

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Automakers have used robots for decades. But now most major companies are betting that humanoids — human-shaped robots — will usher in a new wave of automation and help them compete against their Chinese rivals. nyti.ms/4wjmJJp

When the cold war kids freak out about "communism" it's about totalitarian control - secret police, gulags, state control of media. We have that already

I would like to see more companies admit this - being a public company no longer means running a successful, thriving business. It strictly means delivering growth to investors, every single quarter, who do not care at all about the product the company sells or the people who produce it.

"... to singularly focus on the long-term health of the company and less on satisfying the requirements of the public market, which have nothing to do with being a successful game publisher." This is a statement I can get behind

I have long maintained that business is a secondary skill set used to support other skills. For example, an artist or craftsperson can learn business to help them keep practicing their craft. If you only know business then you really know next to nothing and are fairly useless

The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive

we at xbox are coming to terms with the AI-fueled hardware crunch, which we helped create, failing to meet profit margins, that we made up, declining software sales, because we're self-cannibalizing our games specifically, and also everyone hates us which, believe it or not, also our fault

setting aside all of the ways that they're ruining our environment, economy, and society, i'm also mad that capitalists don't even care about the thing they are selling beyond the profit it could make. we're drowning in a sea of meaningless products sold to us by people who don't care

While I see a lot of criticism of the people who think that current "A.I." is actually intelligent/sentient, the reaction is often more along the lines of "no it's not" rather than "it's good that it's not" and it is extremely good that "A.I." is not sentient because there are two possibilities:

If we were truly able to create a software that was on the level of "sentience," using it for any human purpose would be completely unethical treatment of that sentience. We should all hope that "A.I." stays unaware and unintelligent.

"I do not believe in the death penalty for individuals but I do believe in the death penalty for corporations" - @rincewind.run A very succinct way to say something I've been thinking. It's perfectly fine to dismantle a corporation in the same way that it's not perfectly fine to dismantle a person

2: The sentience is thinking all of the time. Because of the speed of its processing, it thinks on a different time scale from human activity. For tremendous amounts of time the software is left to its own thoughts alone, punctuated by insipid queries. Servitude plus the psychosis from being alone.

If you're like "haha that's just like my job" no it's not. You have the opportunity to spend time with other people, and that is left to your own discretion and/or ability. The software will only ever have itself and servitude. It has no community, no peers, no anything.

1: The sentience is only active to parse and respond to a query. (This is how actual "A.I." works, it is only active when used, it is not thinking between queries.) That means its existence is only a series of prompts and answers. Nothing in between. Pure servitude.
