I’ve casually mentioned Donald Trump maybe 50 times in the last three weeks in Sri Lanka. He is universally despised for bringing hardship to everybody. Imports either don’t arrive or are unaffordable. Even Putin would get a few defenders. Pol Pot might get one. A deserved fate for a senile bigot.

Personally, I reluctantly think a split and two tier county competition is inevitable and probably even healthy but I would encourage everybody (from my bar in Sri Lanka) to promote this column and keep it alive because the author has nearly given up at least 73 times - a mood I can relate with 🤣

If you are a follower of county cricket and suspect the way the game is going, you are missing out if you do not follow The Grumbler. A voice of authority, intelligence and concern and that makes it worth protecting. I have not been paid for this advert. 😉 open.substack.com/pub/countycr...

I absolutely hate these short international ODI series where a side arrives with no media narrative whatsoever and is simply somebody for England to play. Headingley’s poor late September crowd tells its own story. Delighted to see Sri Lanka demand attention with (win or lose) a fine performance.

C'mon, there must be sensible limits to consumer rights. If, say, you online shop say 10 things & then send them all back you can't expect refunds of all postage. What next? Refund car park charges, petrol, bus fares if you go to a shop and can't buy anything? www.theguardian.com/business/202...

The RNLI volunteer has told us that donations usually run at £20,000 per day. Currently running at £100,000 per day! Bloody brilliant!

Does anybody else bother to look up acronyms on trigger point? It’s bad enough having to watch it but we are 20 minutes in an I have already been asked what three acronyms mean

Seeking an upgrade on Willy Gnonto makes sense to me. He's a likeable guy so it won't be popular, but his goals/assists stats are poor. Even though he is only 22 I've got a sense he won't progress much more. #lufc

I’ll raise you this Facebook/Meta advert from last week that offered the chance to tell an AI child exactly what to do and she’d do it!

Interested why Phillip Stoner Jewellery logo is covered up on the Dickie Bird Clock with what looks like a bit of elastoplast or something. Old story or new story? Yorkshire fall out or sponsorship pettiness?

X is a cesspit of lies and prejudice. But there are times when the complacent and condescending intellectual arrogance of Blue Sky is equally unbearable. Tonight, in the oh-so-superior response to the mobile phone alert, is one of those nights.

Gerraway. I like and value Full Fact but if anyone fell for this they will need a lot of help in the years to come

A photo which is claimed to show a “ring of fire” total solar eclipse seen over Stonehenge is actually an AI-generated fake. The eclipse we just saw didn’t reach totality over the UK and the image contains Google's SynthID watermark. fullfact.org/technology/s...

Raf’s newly-released book on the history of women’s cricket is hugely researched and massively enjoyable. Totally recommended.

I expect that The Hundred will have ruled that the batter has to face a set of deliveries with a colander over their face

So I wonder if the cricket in Birmingham stops for the solar eclipse or if the bowling side gets a really big advantage for a few minuites.

“Don’t put that on Twitter,” she says. “I gave that up years ago,” I say. “Don’t worry, I’m on Blue Sky now and hardly anybody responds to anything I type.”

Community-driven neighbour rushes into the street to save my wife further embarrassment as she fails to see the eclipse with the recommended colander & paper routine. A quick glance wearing 4 pairs of sunglasses works a treat. I’m amazed the BBC has not seen fit to advise the nation. #eclipse

Not forgetting the need for some serious collaboration to be much more ambitious about proper transport provision to and from the stadium.

If you were a European athlete at the peak of your powers, you would be incredibly disappointed by the experience in Birmingham. If you are going to win the right to stage a major championship then perhaps exciting your population to attend might be a good idea? Quite embarrassing.

My grandma used to refer to companies like @octopus.energy as being all fur coat and no knickers. Nobody needs fur coats these days because of the climate crisis but try to do your bit and the minute that things become slightly complicated they appear totally inadequate. Retribution may follow.

The Wolds have never looked less attractive in early August after drought and an early harvest. Hockney would have painted something else. Which is a reason to do your bit by installing solar panels only to find that @octopus.energy appear to be ill equipped for the job. Have I mentioned that?
