The second edition of Designing Data-Intensive Applications, by myself and @chris.blue, is finished and sent off to the printers! Ebooks should be available in the next week, and print books in 3–4 weeks. Sigh of relief. 😅 (BTW, this is a good opportunity to support your favourite local bookshop!)

So much of our present crisis is coddled, ignorant, and short sighted people tearing down the institutions that protect them because they don’t understand that bad things can happen.

I’m quoting this because it is a very fair point for which I have an answer: The first thing is to recognize that in a democracy there is no such thing as “ the majority.” Instead, there are many and multiple overlapping majorities that can be assembled from different parts of the whole.

Most of the criticisms are fairly weak, but he does make the valid point that Americans are not as progressive as we wish they were. How do we achieve these goals when the majority of people are so ignorant and wrong about everything that they voted for Trump?

@deck.blue Is there a way to enable something like infinite scroll? I pretty quickly hit the bottom of my home column and don't see a way to load more (older) posts. Perhaps there is something obvious I am missing? Thanks for all you do!

I loved the idea of flowing locks alluding to Emrakul's tentacles - as if she's disguising herself with a glamour of sorts. Painted after Alphonse Mucha's 1896 poster for Job cigarette paper.

Broke: Star Trek says humans will abandon all religion in the future. Woke: Dune says religion will continue to be both a source of strength and a tool of control for oppressed peoples. Bespoke: Babylon 5 says we'll get MORE religions, and Jews will have to sort out what alien foods are kosher.

I’m not too far from thinking we need a full on temperance movement for internet-enabled sports gambling—we need a ban on advertising at the very least, a la alcohol ads. We should probably do the same for options trading by non-accredited investors, too.

When people ask me advice I always say to try and fail. Make ambitious things that suck. It happens to everyone, no matter where in your career you are. Ira Glass once said this:

And then I had a shrink who told me something that felt small but important which was “you are never in a neutral relationship with fear, you are either advancing on it, or retreating from it.” It was the way he phrased it. In militaristic terms, that resonated with me.

Outraged by Jan 6, he spent two years getting inside the top ranks of militias like the Oath Keepers. He was stunningly successful. He penetrated a new generation of militia leaders, which included doctors, cops & government attorneys. This is his story. www.propublica.org/article/ap3-...

Tech companies want to make authoritative sounding knowledge replacers, but they could just as easily make models that point out their own epistemological standing and encourage users to think critically about the content they’re generating.
