Evangelical Christian fundamentalism is why Brazil just might elect Flavio Bolsonario, a far-right traitor to the nation. Non-religious people *must* do much better at community and mutual aid. This is a global problem. Fascism's chief tool is religious delusions. archive.is/jkFDJ

We did save the whales. And the ozone layer, which is now so obscure no one knows about it. Human population growth, baring a few ultra poor countries, is under control, and is necessary to preserve the environment.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Is it a. Managing public opinion, and Trump, while sticking with a pro-net 0 / modernisation agenda; or b. Shows he can be rolled over with a little pressure and has no foundation? Genuinely hard to say at this point; at least I'm not sure.

Farrukh@implausibleblog.bsky.social

My view: Two different messages from the same government, just hours apart, like a throwback to the glory days of the Conservatives 🤷‍♂️ Jackdraw is projected to have an 11 year lifetime generating £2.9 billion in revenue, or £264 million a year in revenue.

So Hammersmith council have a survey out on the 100, 125, or 150% council tax increase, and its understandably part push-polling ("are you aware the council does this or that good thing") and part asking for what services you'd protect, which gets interesting...

In any London Borough, you'd better pray hard for your bridge, 'cause your local council won't be fixing it any time soon if it breaks.

And I guess those affected by the mansion tax will have that to pay on top of the £3k (approx) increase in regular council tax. With no ability, as I understand it, to defer with a lien on the house.

I most "value" street cleaning, parks, libraries, schools... And didn't select any of the housing options, where I suspect there's a lot of savings... Will that be typical?

In any event, one has to at least ask if a 100% rise in tax, with brutal service cuts, might lead to riots. Not everyone can absorb an extra £1000+ a year, which this Labour govt are inflicting, regardless of income.

Um, what? Shut the Barbican? Part of a gathering storm in London over these Starmer tax decisions.

Kate Allen@kateallen.ft.com

The Barbican Centre faces an uncertain future as the City of London Corporation has a looming £70mn budget deficit because Keir Starmer changed the way local government funding is calculated. “Huge cuts are required,” one councillor told the FT. www.ft.com/content/873e...

These recent posts are obviously by a different hand than the POTUS. The grammar, etc, all differs.

(1/7) I am pleased to announce that the Department of the Interior, under the auspices of Secretary Doug Burgum, and in conjunction with famed Golf Course Architect, Tom Fazio, has developed a plan to build a World Class Championship Golf Course on the site of the current East

This is good, but the trouble with Merz is, what will he say tomorrow?

(((Tendar)))@tendar.bsky.social

On the question whether frozen Russian assets in Europe should be transferred to the US, German Chancellor Merz has made very clear: “Those are frozen assets in Europe and they will remain frozen. That is our business and only we will decide.”

Possibly just a point scoring exercise from the anti-point scoring Burnham; also really makes you believe in his commitment to devolution and PR where power-sharing is required....

Reminder that the EU had no compunction about banning Russia Today. If anything, Musk’s behaviour is more egregious - directly assisting a foreign enemy's military attack. And this is on top of his support for race riots, Nazis and CSAM! By any measure, a threat to national security.

Steve Peers@stevepeers.bsky.social

It's legitimate for the EU, the UK, Canada and others to support their Ukrainian ally. If Musk is going to (in effect) assist Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine's allies should sanction Starlink, X and Tesla. At the very least, governments (and people) should stop using his fucking site already.

Can I have "small companies not paying tax" which is the actual problem?

YouGov@yougov.co.uk

What bothers 2024 voters more: large companies not paying tax, or individuals cheating the benefits system? Green: 59% companies / 8% individuals Labour: 48% / 9% Lib Dem: 36% / 11% Reform: 9% / 32% Conservative: 8% / 37% yougov.com/en-gb/daily-...

We need to discuss joining the EU but w/o freedom of movement. Sure. If even the main party proponent of rejoining cannot see FoM as a good in itself, and not a trade of filthy foreigners for cash, "rejoin" is just silly chatter. The mentality gap is too huge.

Peter Stefanovic@peterstefanovic.bsky.social

"I think the majority of people in Britain know that leaving the EU was a mistake" Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Comittee, Dame Emily Thornberry MP, says she wants the next Labour manifesto to include rejoining the EU, but "we need to discuss" if it should also call for freedom of movement

So OTOH Burnham has the gift of the gab, able trot out total rubbish like 'public will be the boss' that the public loves, but I'm not sure he's got any actual policy vision to go with it.

Aligned is when the kid chooses the book's dark side: I think back to ours saying 'being a mud puddle monster would be fun; you can get people all muddy, hohoho' and not the authorised anti-bullying message the author intended

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

I think 'the Tiger in the Tiger Who Came To Tea is an analogy for your mum having an affair' is my absolute favourite 'this absolutely isn't what the author meant, the author has disavowed it, but it is just about plausible' way-too-serious reading of a children's book. What's yours?

We'll see, but not getting a warm feeling about this govts commitment to climate change from multiple angles

Andrew Sissons@acjsissons.bsky.social

New blog: there are rumours swirling that the Warm Homes Plan and particularly the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (the heat pump subsidy) will be cut in the Budget. Scrapping it would be a disastrous decision, leaving UK climate and energy policy in disarray www.nesta.org.uk/blog/four-re...

Below thread is good; I'd add to annoy people further: the left is split. So is the right. This is a left dominant seat, so only the left split mattered here, but these splits are bad news for both blocs where the blocs are closer. And the LD centre does not exist, at least here.

I could care less about football, and realise the sport is more corrupt than Trump, but allowing some idiot and evil Middle Eastern sheik to openly buy his way around the UK law.....is morally wrong and needs to be stopped.

British politics resembles a cruel psychological test: how much pain of Labour doing nutty left things can you take before you vote for crazy Kemi to make it stop?

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

Thing about Badenoch is her immense self-confidence does communicate itself to voters and is one reason her ratings have improved. But you've got to think during a campaign more people would notice it is entirely unjustified.

Left-wing parties boasting about left-wing things and right-wing parties boasting about right-wing things is the hot new trend

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Yeah, trying to get around it is a bit like the various 'counter-intuitive' things Morgan McSweeney did, it didn't change perceptions of Labour, it just confused people and made them angry.

In other words the Iranian operation was a success; it pushed the US operations back from a base with weak security? Funny thing to admit.

Making Stalin's show trial judges look respectable:

Rachel Maddow@maddow.bsky.social

"Among the first to appear before the judge was Angel, a 13-year-old. He had no attorney. “Would you like to request voluntary departure, or should I issue a removal order?” the judge asked “I don’t know,” Angel said, bursting into tears: “I have no one. I have nothing.” www.cnn.com/2026/09/28/p...

Ah, unrepentant hard core philistinism. Quite a bit of it in the Labour party too, truth be told, but usually kept a lot more quiet, in both parties. Again, I see a huge space for a party that cares about culture, community spaces, for all.

Not really able to handle Big Debate right now but isn't it just that some people are using "Zionism" to mean "the core proposition of a 19th century nationalist movement i.e. that the Jewish people get a state" some people to mean "the ideology of the present expansionist settler movement"...

Burnham's Man City comments made me realise why I haven't bothered writing an article about politics since he became PM; he's so incoherent that there's nothing to properly engage with. He's very like Johnson where it's all a ragbag of random beliefs shaped by youthful idealism or career experiences
