I wrote about the influence credit cards have on the restaurant industry, and how it increasingly feels like if you don't have the right card, you can't get into the cool restaurants (and how swipe fees contribute to the fact that you can't afford it anyway) www.weareravenous.com/restaurant-c...

This is a thread of memes about Kash Patel’s defense of bestiality sent to me by current and former FBI employees. Thank you for your attention to this matter. 🧵 1/

Superb exposition from William Pettigrew of how slave trading (let alone the whole plantation complex that depended on it) was “enmeshed in the processes that produced the nation we know today”. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/comm...

One of the lesser-known fantastical creatures I talked about last week at @laworldcon.bsky.social was the bonnacon. It appears in medieval bestiaries as a bull-like creature with horns curved back on themselves and therefore useless to protect itself. Instead, it expels flaming poop in defense.

It is never ever ever ever going to work out better for you if you talk to police before speaking with a lawyer.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

I recently finished knitting a baby blanket. For a decent section of it, I listened to Olivia Waites's NOBODY'S BABY. My card for the parents includes the following two quotes (yes, I have the ebook, too — it's *good*).

In the realm of questions posed during Senate hearings, this one from Ossoff -- "Isn't it humiliating to be unable to answer this?" -- ranks right up there with "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?"

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

OSSOFF: Who won the 2020 election? CLAYTON: Uhm, you know, I'm not going to do this with you O: This is a job interview. You have an obligation to be honest with the committee. Who won the 2020 election? C: I'm not gonna get into that with you O: You're not being honest or forthright C: ...

I mean, we know why, but it should be articulated: It's because Trump is incapable of seeing other humans as people. He lacks any Theory of Mind, and is only capable of understanding humans in terms of what they will do to benefit him something. Otherwise he has no concept of humanity.

Trump just delivered his first speech after the death of his allegedly dear friend Lindsey Graham, which happened less than 48 hours ago. He didn't mention him once. RIP.

All the Enola Holmes movies AND The Other Bennet Sister KEEP saying "please come with my husband and I" etc, literally every time. Not just Kitty and Lydia either but all of the educated people. They're delightful shows and movies. Why are they doing this to me?

A timely and detailed account by Ehlimana Memisevic of how central genocide glorification remains to Serb secessionist politics in Bosnia, and why any meaningful sense of 'reform' must include dealing with the crimes and horrors of the country's recent past. www.justsecurity.org/146250/srebr...

The quick resegregation of higher education is particularly pronounced. In 1951, in the case of McKissick v Carmichael, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals compelled the UNC Chapel Hill School of Law to admit 4 black students. In 2025, they admitted 5. law.unc.edu/wp-content/u...

This rule comes out of the late 19th and early 20th century, when men's dress was still governed by time, place, and occasion. Thus, if you were of a certain social station and had to do a particular thing at a specific time, you knew what you had to wear. Here's a chart from a 1902 periodical.
