Doubly so since we don't get a second bite at the apple. Clearly the Brazilians who came out for round two weren't the same crew that was out for round one. Don't be caught not getting a bite.

I was surprised when Bolsonaro came out ahead in the first round of voting. It felt like Lula had it in the bag I think a lot of Brazilians felt the same and didn’t bother to go to the polls. The first round shook people up. This time they showed up Americans, take note: Vote!!!

i like that the big divide on this post is whether people read it, correctly, as "*run explicitly* on banning online gambling" or whether they ignored the modifying verb and adverb and read it as "i don't think anyone should ban online gambling"

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

Originally one volume of ca. 600 ff. (10 x 14 in.), divided into seven volumes a century later. Vol. 1 remained in the eastern Caliphate while the others were transferred to Kairouan and deposited in the Great Mosque by the 1200s. Leaves (mostly from Vol. 1) appear on the art market from 1912.

Reading about the Blue Qur'an today, and...just...wow. Gold Kufic script (likely gold leaf, not shell!) on indigo-dyed parchment (technique uncertain! Brushed? Dipped? Pressed? No one knows!). Written in the early ʿAbbāsid period (ca. 800), place uncertain. 2024 research suggests Cairo or Baghdad.

It doesn't just look that way. It *is* a sign of weakness. Or an admission of guilt. Take your pick.

"When we seem like we're scared to have a few dozen international observers watch the practice of our democracy, it looks like an act of weakness." Longtime Colorado politico and diplomat Dan Baer joins us Wednesday as the US rebuffs European election observers for the first time in two decades.

We have an interest in preserving democracy worldwide. We got off track fighting wars to export democracy, but wanting democracies to flourish in other countries is entirely reasonable.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

This, but also, as a liberal I believe in freedom and human rights for all people, all around the world. That translates into rooting interests in elections where freedoms and rights are on the ballot, as they often are.

In the absence of that, you'll see more things like operations to influence foreign elections, ordinary US citizens having opinions about what happens elsewhere (and vice versa) and other bad ways to deal with this. "Return to a world where there aren't global externalities" isn't on the table.

We pretty clearly need some kind of governmental framework that's global in scope for at least some issues; what exactly the scope and powers are can be debated, but the necessity is obvious at this point.
