An Egyptian court on Tuesday ordered the closure of Mada Masr and the confiscation of its equipment, and fined editor-in-chief Lina Attalah three million Egyptian pounds (around $54,000) which is the maximum penalty.

PSA: I suspect a few colleagues - producers esp - will be reaching out today and tomorrow. Happy to chat, but can you please text ahead? I never, ever pick up calls from new callers or private numbers. For security (malware) and peace of mind (hate calls.) Thank you 🙏

I'm seeing folks on here—mostly diaspora—say things like, nothing to see in today's election. Genocide won't stop if Netanyahu goes, it might slow down a little to pacify intl pressure but not much will change. This sounds like hard-bitten realism. It actually gives despair.

Above all, "Genocide slowing down" buys time. To rebuild communities, to renew alliances, to shore up wins of the anti-apartheid movement. To strategise. Genocide is a finite race: at the finish line, no Palestinians remain in Palestine. The slower we can make progress toward that line, the better.

Or, put it this way. Removing Bibi won't catapult us out of the hole we're in. But if he goes, Palestinians & Israelis will face digging ourselves out of a hole 200ft deep, rather than from a hole 600ft deep and crumbling. It will give everyone, home & abroad, something to build upon.

And I really hope anyone that says something like "the downside of this settling down means less pressure on Israel" takes a good look in the mirror, because even if you're right (and I'm not sure you are), what exactly is the lives-to-sanctions ratio that makes it worthwhile?

(Also, to me this thinking tells of the diaspora's and international community's exaggerated sense of importance. This might be where you are positioned. But you can't smth new on the ground from afar. Activities and choices made between the river and the sea matter as much, and ultimately more.)

than most diaspora critics, bc they don't have the luxury of despair in a life-or-death election) may not actually see their towns bankrupted, their urban growth cut off, their streets given over to organised crime, w disenfranchisement and exile on the horizon.

"Genocide slowing down" means Lebanon and Syria may well get a breather, too, and it means Israel probably won't initiate new wars against Iran for the foreseeable (although, frankly, now that Trump is in a corner it's hard to see Israel not joinining into an American-led war.)

And after three years of utter horror, there is plenty reason to despair. But personally, even if I felt like nothing matters anymore, I wouldn't be telling it to people who still feel like fighting. Because - are you kidding? "Genocide slowing down" means literally fewer dead Palestinian children.

"Genocide slowing down" means the shit that Netanyahu and Ben Gvir started in Hebron doesn't spread to the West Bank tomorrow. "Genocide slowing down" means Palestinians of '48 (voting today in record numbers despite knowing the realities of Zionism much more intimately

Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.

Oh, man. Obviously, we all knew Ori was very ill—he battled cancer publicly, with the courage, integrity and candour he became so known for. But the news still stuns, somehow. One of the best and bravest voices our era brought to the fore. We'll only miss him more and more as it wears on.

This would be economically illiterate & environmentally disastrous - and makes us less secure: undermining efforts to reduce energy bills by reducing dependence on gas, increasing vulnerability to global dictators, driving climate emissions & knee capping a market that’s just beginning to take off

🚨 BREAKING: Israel's Supreme Court effectively upholds ban on Balad leader Sami Abu Shehade. "Effectively", because his team was just told there's a majority among Justices to uphold the ban, but would he consider just withdrawing his candidacy so that they wouldn't have to.

(A more charitable reading of this weird manoeuvre may be that the Supreme Court president is trying to mitigate by stopping short of a ruling that would that would become a lifelong personal ban and a potentially binding precedent. But still.)

The Court will now consider the ban on Offer Cassif, the Jewish member for Hadash. They're now in a corner: if they uphold the ban, they create a precedent that will be used to ban other leftwing Jewish candidates. If they overturn it, it's looks (talks & walks) like apartheid.

The emerging theme of Israel's most pivotal election in a generation is less nationalist mastery than liberal cowardice. We're here bc Yair Golan's Democrats, fearing hypothetical electoral backlash, voted to ban Sami (predictably, this provoked actual backlash, losing them a seat in the polls).

Now the Supreme Court, itself under a life-or-death assault by the very ministers who sought to ban Sami, is folding and upholding the ban - but not even having the guts to issue a verdict: they're actually asking! Sami! to withdraw! and save them the blame! Beneath contempt.

Always had Sheeran down as a gifted songwriter who is trying real hard to keep his public persona apolitical - but this isn't neutrality. It's a political stance as unequivocal as Macklemore's, except Ed doesn't appear to have the guts to articulate it out loud.

This is it. If Burnham’s Labour doesn’t stop the ongoing assault on migrants/asylum seekers/refugees and trans people, the far right will not be defeated. Keeping Mahmood is insulting.

Alasdair Mackenzie@alasdairmackenzie.bsky.social

If the price for a bit of mild social progress is more racist crackdowns led by Mahmood, that’s not only a catastrophe for migrants & their families, but also a catastrophe for the chances of all of us of resisting the far right

Dimi Reider reposted

Listen, I agree there’s loads of good signs re Burnham, but taking a firm pro-immigration stance should be a basic requirement for an ostensibly progressive politician. And sorry for being biased here as an immigrant myself. Mahmood made me want to leave the UK and keeping her is incredibly hurtful.
