people who say that all creative endeavor can be replaced with AI probably need to reckon with the fact that all televised sports events with human athletes could easily be replicated by high-definition computer-animated simulations….and yet we don’t do this and no one seems to want to.

Feeling embarrassed by your past work is not a sign of incompetence. It’s a mark of growth. Regretting your prior decisions doesn't reflect poor judgment. It reveals new insight. Cringing at your old opinions doesn't display ignorance. It demonstrates an open mind.

Donald Trump’s termination of Register of Copyrights, Shira Perlmutter, is a brazen, unprecedented power grab with no legal basis. It's surely no coincidence he acted less than a day after she refused to rubber-stamp Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models.

Fascinating read!

Tech compensation is trimodal: meaning a software eng can make 2-4x the compensation, depending on what company they work at. Today, we validate this theory with more data points than ever: 20,000+, coming from Levels.fyi You don't want to miss this: newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/trimodal

An interesting read on layoffs. “…leadership often swoops in and redirects efforts toward entirely different goals. You trust their judgment…Then, when the arbitrary goals they set aren’t met, the company decides to cut staff. Those who made the poor decisions remain” mertbulan.com/2025/01/26/o...

This is wild. Also a horrible day to have eyes and see how far AI generated videos have come 🙈

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source. Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

I found this post and clip validating in times like this where people think removing DEI means “going back” to merit-based hiring. Former Google CEO talking about how data showed “extreme evidence of male bias against female candidates.” reddit.com/r/womenintec...

I finally did it. I got an email that my Netflix subscription would automatically increase in price next month so I canceled it. Member since 2011!

in 1992 the super bowl lost viewers at halftime to an episode of “in living color.” so the nfl got michael jackson for the 1993 show, who set a new standard with what’s still one of the most watched tv events ever. basically the super bowl halftime show as we know it exists because of black people

I know most folks that use the platform will be informed via these posts on the platform. I also think centralized docs (maybe on www.blackskyweb.xyz) on how Blacksky works (for the user, in the app, not just the tech behind it) would be helpful ❤️ sometimes re-finding a post to share info is hard

It’s happening! 🤩

Bluesky@bsky.app

We had to get in on the video action too — Bluesky now has custom feeds for video! Like any other feed, you can choose to pin these or not. Bluesky is yours to customize.

Ok I sampled PixelFed. I desperately want dark mode. It feels a little clunky which is expected for any new app. I think I want to see Flashes for a proper comparison (essentially mastodon vs. bsky for Instagram competitors). I’m likely going to be biased towards bsky to be clear.

👀 interesting… “Users who post to Flashes will also have their posts appear on Bluesky, and comments on those posts will also feed back into the app as if it were just another Bluesky client.” Maybe I’m getting old, but one interface for both sounds great to me! techcrunch.com/2025/01/15/b...

I’ve found myself getting back into reading lately. Finally finished Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, which was recommended to me by at least 5 different people. Lovely story and characters though I didn’t love some of the events used to push the plot forward.

And now I’ve randomly pulled off a physical book from my actual bookshelf called The Final Girl Support Group for what I expect to be silly and fun.

I’ve found myself getting back into reading lately. Finally finished Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, which was recommended to me by at least 5 different people. Lovely story and characters though I didn’t love some of the events used to push the plot forward.

Then I read The Silent Patient because I’d had it in my Kindle library forever. I wasn’t into the main character and his actions but I did enjoy the twist! It was probably obvious to others but I was genuinely surprised.

My company (paraphrasing) said as long as we’re doing as well as our competitors, then we’ll keep doing what we’re doing. It’s a slippery slope if everyone is doing worse.

I’m enjoying bsky but discovering I really need to create separate feeds for political, fun, and tech posters. It’s a lot of whiplash in 5 minutes of scrolling

Every. Time. But honestly, if your old code doesn’t make you cringe, did you grow at all since then? (😅 positive spin attempt)

“Decentralized platforms like Bluesky, then, are a kind of safeguard for that inclusive future. Fraser isn’t interested in looking back. “Billionaires broke social media,” he said. The real power is with the people.” 👏 eager to see how Blacksky and Bluesky evolve over time, but I’m excited!
