In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.

Yeah start insinuating he has morning chai rather than coffee, say that he knocks things for 6 rather than hits a home run, allege that he is generally a clean living good boy who loves his mother and prays every Friday (pejorative).

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

This now seems to have degenerated into endlessly serving me 30-second non-sequential clips of The Green Mile. Which, perfectly cromulent film. But I suspect this is not the optimum way to watch it.

Been following the Christa Pike story so obviously all my algorithmic social media is now HEY WE SEE YOU LIKE EXECUTIONS WANNA SEE SOME EXTREMELY PRURIENT SHIT WE MADE WITH AI

one of my darkest traits is that I can't read for letter acronyms as anything but plays on MILF/DILF. like oh you got a DSLR? that's a Dad Sliding Lengthwise into me, Raunchily

I recently read a recent (2015ish) Korean novel in which the main character is diagnosed as HIV+ and it is an inconvenience to him, something he has to live with, but still live. And when I contrast that to the films and novels I grew up with which depicted HIV and AIDS, that's a hell of a thing.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I know absolutely nothing about Lula except that i saw someone share a clip on insta of him in celebration kissing a trans woman politician on the cheek and oh my god is that a radical act for a politician in 2026 so lets fucking go

since when did settlement get granted automatically because I’m pretty sure I had to pay £4k and also fill out a pretty long application and provide about a dozen pieces of paper evidence and also live here for a fucking decade and pay visa fees and health surcharges the whole fucking time

I think where I've landed is: all the "prepare and stockpile" stuff is alarming not because it means "there's something terrible on the way that the government aren't telling us" but because it means "state capacity is so eroded that we no longer have the ability to respond to disaster effectively".

I feel the same way about this as I did when there was all that discourse about whether movies need sex scenes. Sure, quibble about the specific instance, the particular work, but if the point of art is to represent and understand the human experience, then it's going to be in there fairly often.

Does John Banville think artists have a duty to take a stance on moral issues? His stand is apparently for amorality. www.independent.ie/irish-news/s...

Sam Selvon looking up from making a single brilliant sentence last five pages to ask what the fuck they're saying now?

Yes, I will die on the hill of "Fuck off & stop internetifying literature". Yes, I will die on the hill of "The intended reader had no problem with reading long paragraphs in an EL Doctorow or Dorothy Lessing novel in 1974 & the intended reader will have no problem reading them in my novels either."

So it turns out, because I'm now in the mood for it and don't own physical copies, that all the BBC and Hammer Quatermass is on YouTube.

Watching The Stone Tape, which I've definitely seen before but can't recall a damn thing about. I'd also forgotten it has that 70s BBC outside broadcast thing that briefly makes you wonder if you somehow turned motion smoothing on.

Who has offered anything in opposition to this? Not the Sensible Moderate centrists, who have fought to destroy opposition and establish themselves as the natural opposition within our enfashed system. A strategy that has gone Kaboom in one country after another.

Here’s Chapoman Matt Christman in 2017, after that torchlit fascist rally in Charlottesville. We’re almost ten years later now. Does anything here sound wrong? I would say no, it is not wrong.

I mean, this is not complex: the death drive is right at the core of fascism, and fascism requires a constant sprint towards more cruelty, destruction and insanity. Any second it is at rest, it is dying. So it must keep getting worse and more extreme www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...
