πŸͺ spaces alpha release πŸͺ folks, this is the big one! lots of updates across pretty core protocol mechanisms. hopefully the last/only of it's kind (tho we are planning another release next Thurs)

discourse.atmosphere.communityAtproto spaces alpha updatesWe just cut another spaces alpha release today! This is the biggest yet, there are multiple breaking changes across core protocol pieces. This is likely the last/only release of this size. Though we ...

Atmosphere update: atproto apps are growing 20% month over month, and last week we passed 1,000 daily active apps.

many of yall already know how much jim rules. if only you saw all the super impactful work he did behind the scenes at bsky too. it goes deep. learned a bunch from jim and so, so glad to have been able to spend so many days together hackin it up! πŸ’™

Hello friends! Life update: after 1.5 years, I've decided it's time to move on from Bluesky and start the next chapter. Today's my last day! It has been an absolute honor and pleasure to work with such a talented, fun team on a critical mission. I'm so proud of them and excited to see what's next

@toni.bsky.team built a $10b business at @automattic.com where 90% of it flows into the ecosystem. Let’s stop talking about how to divide up the pennies left on the table for creators and builders in walled gardens. The time is now for creators & builders to build and they should take home the $$

@thisismissem.social continuing to connect the dots for us all on bringing decentralized login to the web! these updates are hugely useful to see the big picture, with so many individuals and ecosystems in the mix.

Here's the first update on the FedCM grant that I've been working on, which admittedly is quite behind schedule due to my chronic illness. Hoping to get more out quicker in the future.

I'm excited to announce that the PLC Organization now has a statute! And a bank account! And a @standard.site publication! All the important stuff. The PLC Org is an independent Swiss Association meant to operate the PLC directory, which collects and distributes signed updates to atproto accounts.

on thursdays we drop the latest/greatest updates to the spec on the atproto spaces alpha host. first round of updates are now live! if you're interested in building against atproto spaces while it's in alpha, you can read more and get access here: atproto.com/blog/atproto...

made a post in the atmosphere developer forum about timelines for rolling out spaces (aka permissioned data) and community groups to the full network. tl;dr: a couple more months of iteration and prep, then major PDS operators could coordinate to go "general availability" around mid-November

preeetttty cool seeing what atmospheric login in the browser might look like πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘€ super grateful that @sgo.to from the chrome team is digging into this, helping us rapidly get to the heart of the UX and technical questions to sort through. feels like it's already really taking shape!

Sam Goto@sgo.to

@thisismissem.social @divy.zone and I recently went through an exploration of how the browser can help you login to websites with atproto accounts. We recently presented to the FedID CG and here is a sneak peek in case you couldn't join! This is early but we'd love your input before we go too far!

PDSls now supports the Spaces alpha for non-public data! read-only, highly experimental, expect breaking changes

the atproto space race has officially begun

The most significant extension to the protocol since launchβ€”atproto spacesβ€”is now officially alpha software you can start testing with. Here's more about the goals and how to start testing. atproto.com/blog/atproto...

bluesky has always offered protocol services for devsβ€” the relay, jetstream, and the bluesky api are the main ones. but until today those haven't really had a proper home. the crew as been working hard, and there's (even) more here than meets the eye, let's break this down!!

another goodie: lexicon publishing meets CI/CD. as we update app.bsky, chat.bsky, network.bsky lexicons in the bsky monorepo, they'll be linted and checked for breaking changes in CI. on merge to main they will be published to the network. no more stale bsky lexicons on protocol. more on this soon!

separating the bsky SDK from @atproto/api is also a major win in giving the protocol the space it deserves as a universal technology. going forward we'll be migrating bsky-specific packages/services out of the atproto typescript monorepo to here: github.com/bluesky-soci...

the headline for me is jetstream v2. while in the past jetstream has offered only live data, now we provide full network replay, sliced by accounts or collections. and it goes... fast. tens of billions of records are available to build with. tens. of billions.

πŸ‘‹πŸΎ I have joined @bsky.app as VP of Engineering! I’ve been admiring this team’s work for years, and I’m thrilled to be joining them to build the future of the open social web.

@why.bsky.world dove in ahead of us to some of the hairiest problems making atproto real, functional in practice. and then once we solved problems together made sure we didn't hesitate to push the button, to move forward and do hard things. thanks buddy!!

Today is my last day being responsible for any random thing around Bluesky. Its been a looooong journey and things feel calm enough now that I can finally take a break and figure out what I want to do next (immediate next is vacation ofc).

brilliant news for bluesky and for the atmosphere!

i want to spread the word about atproto. if you’re running a podcast, i’d be happy to hop in to talk about it. i understand it decently well and can explain it without much jargon. it’s one of the most interesting developments in the last 30 years of web, and i can defend that. please dm to set up!
