I really enjoyed returning to Past Present Future to talk about "political conversions" - starting with my favourite topic: interwar socialists who eventually embraced fascism

Israel's behavior demonstrably does not get better when people are solicitous of its security concerns. Years of quiet in the West Bank and on the Gaza front were rewarded with more land grabs. And when people aren't, they lash out with genocidal violence.

Mikhail Gorbaechev@mikhailgorbaechev.bsky.social

"Israel is operating under a paranoid psychosis that makes them wage endless war on their neighbors and brutally oppress half the population they rule over" is an explanation for their behavior but it doesn't really change the calculus of what we need to do to knock some sense into them.

The problem with Justin Webb’s position at the BBC is not just his flagrant bias, or his writing for the Mail, or his audible prejudices, it’s that all those things make him embarrassingly bad at analysing politics. “Left = firebrand = too woke = trouble for Dems” is about his level

Really worth noting that even in Red Wall constituencies which backed Leave, most *Labour* voters back rejoining the EU. Over 90% of Labour considerers back rejoin - opposition to EU membership is mainly coming from non-Labour voters in these seats. Was on Times Radio yesterday making this point.

stockpiling has convinced me that the government could solve the 'crisis of masculinity' and defeat populism forever by assigning men more little projects (perhaps related to climate resilience?) that it would describe as 'critical to national security'

odd thing about stockpiling backlash is that it’s guidance. those suffering immediate financial hardship or restrictive housing, as adults can just say “that’s not appropriate for me now”. in a crisis they still benefit from reduced service pressures and neighbour support when others can follow it.

Two-round electoral systems are very underrated - I’m always saying this

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

One benefit of holding leaders accountable for crimes is that if Flávio Bolsonaro tries to overturn this election, he knows exactly where he’d end up. In prison, next to his father.

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Glory to Lula and a thousand years of democratic socialism

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Lula has taken the overall, countrywide lead back. With 62% of precincts counted, he is ahead 50.6% to 49.4%, which is an edge of roughly 900,000 votes. He is also getting the shift he needs (compared to the first round) in virtually every state that has reported most of the vote.

As part of Andy Burnham's devolution agenda, I have decided to concentrate less of my personal life London, and so will be starting a second relationship based in Manchester ("Girlfriend North").

My current (Westminster-based) partner objects to these efforts to "re-wire" our relationship, but I am determined to decentralise my personal life and transfer power away from London.

I'm also open to exploring a third partner based in Brussels (subject to negotiations & rigourous public opinion work concerning the best form of relationship).

As someone who runs a small business and for some reason pays my taxes…. Today’s “red tape” cut to company paperwork makes no real difference to me or my ability/desire to expand. As someone who investigates small business high street tax evasion… great news for candy stores and scam dropshippers!

Ah yes, Cliveden, site of one of the Conservative party's most glorious episodes

Henry Mance@henrymance.ft.com

There's obviously a serious point here, but it's quite funny optics for the Conservative party to complain that it used to be so much quicker to build a stately home.
