After the work I did updating my Environmental Science and Natural Hazards resources pages, of course our federal government has fully embarked on a program of destroying science and education. So, more updates and if anyone has any suggestions let me know.🧪⚒️ leopardsanddragons.com/environmenta...

THREAD 3: The Plant with Biggest Cancer Risk As we worked on this story, we spent weeks considering which plants to focus on. We needed to visit communities/get input from area residents. Yes, all of these plants have been written abt before. We let the data tell us where to go. THIS CHART POINTED>

Ultimately, if you only have time to know one thing about all of this, just know that not a single solitary tech oligarch, tech company, or tech-backed politician has a single solitary serious commitment to the existence of Black political power or economic security in their plans for the future.

JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

As a researcher, I can't really emphasise enough that the main thing LLMs have done is significantly slow me down and add cognitive burden. I'm just *tired* of every aspect of this trend at this point.

I never ceases to amaze me how absolutely ass R documentation can be for things that should be straightforward. Amazing stuff for angels on the heads of pin programing but just crap at this is the hidden key word you need so your scale is rendered correctly. So damn frustrating.

Do you know what to do if you feel earthquake shaking? If you live in North America and the ground starts to shake the recommended action is to “drop, cover, and hold on”.

pls stop asking chatbots what they "think" and then adding it to your articles or posting it for giggles

I have a to do list of things I have to do before I can do anything on my other to do list and have to stop work on both at 4 to work on the other thing that hasn’t made it onto a to do list. EEK!

The worst thing about education is the idea that (at the university level, or even the post-graduate level) there is a period at which it is reasonable for students to stop engaging with things outside of the narrow vocational silo. It's not. Broadening is as important as deepening. Period.

Why's Science reporting on an unpeer reviewed preprint *at all*?

Can the new cutting-edge AI models feel pain? They at least behave as if they do, according to a recent study. The work, which has not been peer reviewed, has divided #AI researchers. https://scim.ag/4hHU6BA

There are very real safety concerns we need to address with generative LLMs. Deepfakes, privacy, AI psychosis, etc We don't need to entertain goofy nonsense from people claiming they're inventing the torment nexus from the science fiction classic "Dipshit That's Not The Torment Nexus Go Outside."

Is it any wonder I am losing my damn mind? This has been happen for YEARS and they insist they can’t fix it. It doesn’t go to anything! It has been going off all day and has been going off - on and off - the whole first couple weeks of classes!

This went from a trying to put the cereal in the fridge and putting the milk in the cupboard morning, to a few random slides deciding to resize text weirdly during class, to 'I will just quickly check my email' and surfacing over an hour later. I am very tired of today.

I can't think for shit right now. Trying not to think about current news but made the mistake of prepping "Why this class is important for everyone" for Natural Hazards class and ran into video of flash floods in Nepal. $#$@#%&@!!!

Yes--the destruction of the US Geological Survey is absolutely going to get people killed. The survey is responsible for geohazard analysis among other things--everything from earthquakes and volcanoes to landslides to slumps.

I have attempted a burnt chocolate cheesecake for my mother's birthday. I added dark chocolate and Cointreau rather than lemon rind and juice - trying to get the flavor of those chocolate Christmas oranges. Fingers crossed! It looks and smells good. Find out tomorrow if it worked.

The Trump administration is cancelling federal support for #NOAA’s Arctic Report Card, an essential scientific report that shows how fossil fueled climate change is having an alarming effect on the vital signs of this unique region of the world.

NYSDEC is asking for New Yorkers in several counties, including Erie, to help stop the spread of invasive Spotted Lanternflies (SLFs). If you see a Spotted Lanternfly, kill it immediately by stepping on it or crushing it. More on how to report and destroy egg masses at https://loom.ly/T4W0b2M

PSA - Mammograms are very important to have routinely! Mammograms when you have sprained ribs are really, really painful. You do NOT want to do it! So why didn't you reschedule? A: because they set appointments a year out & it is a nightmare. B: it has been like 3 weeks & I thought it would be ok

Wow, there seems to be no end to the editorials that blame scientists for “lack of public trust”. And that completely ignores governments and politicians and billionaire media owners who attack science and lie about science. We cannot communicate our way out of this.

Questions of public trust can be addressed only through better communication and research that meets society’s interests, says Peter Gluckman go.nature.com/4xekdFo

Evolution of the college syllabus ... short document (1 - 2 pages) listing all or at least most of the class policies / information with assumption that students have/read student handbook for institutional stuff institutional stuff starts getting mandated and added to syllabus (2 - 4 pages) ...

Syllabi found deficient - additional requirements added and templates provided/threatened (4 - 6 pages) Students found not be be reading/retaining information so introduction of new pedagogical structuring to make syllabi friendlier and easier to understand (8 - 10 pages) ...

Stuff happens - Financial crises in higher education reduction of copy budgets/MOOCs fallout - move everything online Syllabi now posted online populated with links that may or may not work and all that pedagogical structuring has gotten trashed - doubling down on students not reading/retaining

Look what I made! I linked together all of the jump rings and put the beads on eye pins. Learned quite a bit making this and now I have a pretty bracelet that fits me!

Got x-rays for my ribs today (wasn't that fun) and am now awaiting results. I had no idea that a rib 'sprain' was even a possible thing. Whatever I managed to do, this is no fun at all and I do not recommend it.

I sketched a thing that is @scalzi.com's fault. The background is supposed to be kaijuesqu. This insult reminded me of one my mother used on a gym teacher when I was a kid - "You, you, you ... absolute doorknob!" (I had just had knee surgery and the gym teacher was ... not a nice person.)
