At the basic mechanical level, the story of Serbia's elections, as those in Brazil, as those in Hungary, is turnout, turnout, turnout. Those who want to defend democracy must, above all, show up. That is the lesson. My short analysis for @odgovor.bsky.social. odgovor.ba/article/28410/

odgovor.baSerbia’s Democratic ExampleThe results of the parliamentary elections in Serbia are a political earthquake for the Western Balkans. Few seasoned observers truly believed the Student List could top Aleksander Vucic’s entrenched ...

This is a really well done piece on surveillance at the US's southern border, great graphics, interviews, reconstructions of what the cameras can see. Often I think this would be met with resignation. They've also caught a moment where lots of people are feeling uneasy about tech and have been able to build on concerns about data centres.

It's also a rare moment where surveillance of people who are seen as being at the margins of society (people crossing the border irregularly) overlaps with groups of people who don't normally feel they have to worry about such things.

but also because it's often hard to show the stakes. In this case, it seems like there is such an egregious privacy invasion (the area covered, the high resolution of the cameras, close monitoring of residents' properties) that people actually are bothered by it.

This is lovely - London Centric stay up all night as Oxford St is pedestrianised. Love the teenage bus geeks travelling in to ride on the last bus, confused taxi drivers, pedicab riders determined to keep using the street. Then a rainbow as the sun comes up www.londoncentric.media/p/oxford-str...

the reporting and photography, including of this Madagascar child drinking from a gold mine's waste water pipe, is incredible. the story is infuriating. a look at how dirty gold is laundered into the world economy, with help from the one org meant to regulate it. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/19/w...

Astonishing cope here. PISA doesn't measure rote learning, it is not based on the English curriculum. It relies heavily on comprehension and applying knowledge to a new context.

My concern with this is we'll end up recreating the failed supply-side approach to disinformation while ignoring the far more significant demand side. First is recognising the relationship between institutions, publics, and counterpublics have changed significantly.

Okay, let's be real here, Russia absolutely did interfere in the Brexit Referendum, but only in the same way all major world powers, including the US and EU, are constantly fucking about in each others elections and referenda, and always have been. That's literally just global geopolitics.

Just look at the glee on Nigel Farage’s face as he watches a Piddington resident cry about the overt racism she, her Caribbean heritage husband, and their two children have felt in the village during the referendum. Time and again he’s showing us exactly who he is.

Omg, finally.

A detail missing from The Times story… the woman who took the photo shared it to a Facebook group called ‘South east patriots’.

The Times has run a story this morning about how ‘polite’ the masked men in Dover were to three white ladies on a train. Propaganda in its clumsiest form.

Nick Robinson on Today is literally talking about ‘legitimate concerns’ after second night of organised men dressed in black - sorry ‘protesters’ - mobilising en masse in another littoral town. This is how street fascism is normalised

Can’t quite get over the fact a party that waxes lyrical about how they are patriots and represent the views of the common Brit have admitted on camera they can’t get any British donors 😭 What a time to be alive

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

If you're looking for a long read this weekend, we've just published an investigation into the detention network in Xinjiang, which we discovered has the largest detention capacity in the world relative to its population.

UK Members of Parliament Ian Duncan Smith and Alex Sobel put out this statement in response to our Xinjiang story, describing the extensive prison network in the region and campaign of forced assimilation that is taking place there.

NEW: Xinjiang has the highest detention capacity in the world, according to FT analysis - enough space for almost 1 in 40 people in the region - more than five years after the Chinese govt announced the camps had closed.
