Genuine question: what's the actual business model for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google in LLMs? You can download most models for free and run them yourself. Investors are putting in billions. Into what, exactly? Ease of use? That has a very short horizon.

Oh my gosh, the best political video on YouTube just got updated after a decade and a half and it's still just perfect! It visualizes something that I've talked about a lot since the first video came out: The real problem is the billionaire class. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gxl...

I’m not saying we should shed a tear for the financial impositions faced by multimillionaires. It’s just an illustrative point that the billionaires have *so much* money. They have so much more wealth than you imagined. This visualization has gotten much worse since 2012: youtu.be/QPKKQnijnsM?...

Russia basically has two futures. Accept that they are a middle-ranking nation and work in concord with a Europe that will respect them as equals, or don't do that and continue to engage with China who will pay lip-service to their Imperial affections whilst really treating them as their suzerain.

The Lake Ontario/Lake America thing is a profoundly stupid version of it, but in millions of other subtler ways, we are force fed American values and American ideas about the world, because American companies like Google control the internet.

I do not understand why Palestinians in Gaza being enslaved to replace bomb sniffing dogs has not been a bigger part of the public understanding of the conflict. This has been very well covered in the western press!

apnews.comIsraeli use of human shields in Gaza was systematic, soldiers and former detainees tell the APSeveral Palestinians and Israeli soldiers say troops are systematically forcing Palestinians to act as human shields in Gaza, sending them into buildings and tunnels to check for bombs and gunmen.
LOWρUFO 🇺🇦🇵🇸🌍@lowrhoufo.bsky.social

It's obvious that the naked subservience of the PA has gotten them less than nothing. I condemn all crimes against humanity, unlike this guy who is happy to see chains padlocked around Palestinian necks because their lives are worth less than dogs. It is not true that violence is never the answer

Gonna briefly do an AI take: it used to be possible to have interesting discussions about AI here, and it's got progressively less so. You can't just think AI is bad, or overhyped, you've also got to subscribe to a very particular worst-case scenario about *how* it's bad and how bad it is.

Good example of the dynamic on here, which is not that the site has "pro-AI" and "anti-AI" factions, but that even acknowledging the existence of a massive field of ubiquitous new technologies is verboten except via hysterical, belligerent ignorance. It's a pure cultural norm untethered to reality.

"A bunch of people would rather post on Race War Now Dot Swastika rather than Bluesky because you keep making fun of their imaginary computer friend" is a RESOUNDING endorsement for the concept of hostility.

Today, I'm writing an article, but I like to dictate my words instead of typing them on the keyboard. With a bit of AI processing, it actually gets 99.9% of the words correct because it understands what I'm trying to say, and the punctuation is perfect. Nice!

Anders Puck Nielsen@anderspucknielsen.dk

We need the discussion about AI to move beyond the "AI is bad" shitstorm level on Bluesky. It's hurting the adoption of open social media, because normal people don't like getting yelled at. So I think I'll start posting more success stories about how AI is useful in my life.

I don't think everyone needs to use AI. I don't think it's good that AI is being shoved everywhere when it's not wanted or asked for. But I don't find the complete hatred of all AI tools productive or helpful to building a better internet. And others appear to be feeling the same thing.

I'm not saying it's anyone's responsibility to praise AI usage. I agree with much of the criticism of the tool. But for many, many people, it is a useful tech (I have talked about the ways I find it extraordinarily useful, only to have people here mock me, insisting my lived experience is a lie).

The exponentially increasing solar energy beats other sources, and makes a mockery of predictions year on year. This is new industry that China is unfortunately capturing, especially aided by a sick US president that wants to line the pockets of coal Barons. Carbon Capture is a joke.

ProPublica@propublica.org

The same climate experts whose model overestimated the potential of geological carbon storage have repeatedly underestimated solar power — one of the energy technologies that would allow more oil to remain in the ground. ➡️ Read our full story w/ @drilledmedia.bsky.social: https://propub.li/4gdTCBc
