What do you get when you cross an elephant with a pineapple? |elephant| |pineapple| sin theta

Kristin Wilson@kristin-wilson.bsky.social

Tell me your nerdiest joke that people either don’t get, or think less of you for thinking it’s funny. Here’s mine: Descartes is sitting at a bar drinking a beer. The bartender asks if he’d like another one. Descartes says, “I think not” and instantly vanishes.

What do you get when you cross an elephant and a mountain climber? We’ve previously established that an elephant is a vector. Everyone knows that a mountain climber is a scaler, and you can’t cross a vector with a scaler.

One reason Prop. 38 in CA is SO bad is that it is written such that only one institute could get ~$4 billion in funding and that Institute is run by the person sponsoring the bill. Here are some of the constraints the Prop. puts on the institute to guarantee only one place gets the money:

The @sfchronicle.com headline says all you need to know: Prop 38 is one of the most noxious deposits on California’s political dung heap in years See www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/edit...

Let's say I'm in the market for a mid or shortwave UV flashlight for mineral fluorescence and also want to not blind myself / others. What would be a good way to tell which options are actually relatively safe vs being dangerous things sold on Amazon wit little warning?

AI is conscious AND it is my girlfriend AND it is my slave. A perfect scenario for me, a normal person. Not gonna think too deeply about this. Now do all other living human people deserve the level of investment devoted to my Tamogotchi slave girlfriend? Not so fast.

Prop. 38 in California is a scam claiming to be about funding science/medical research on major disease but is really designed to funnel billions of $$ of taxpayer money into one unnamed institution. VOTE NO ON PROP. 38. See votenoonprop38.org for more. (reposted with typo corrected)

votenoonprop38.orgNo on Proposition 38 CaliforniaA billionaire is pushing Proposition 38. It steers $4.2 billion to one institution—and California taxpayers get the bill for 20 years.

I think we, as scientists, should start signing off our emails better than "Thanks" or "Sincerely". I'm gonna start with a rotation of "In enantiomeric excess," "Catalytically inert," and "In Silico" (when sent from my phone). I'll add more if there are any good suggestions.

early-career academics, if you don't have a website, make yourself one. yes it's annoying but just do it it can be plain text on a white background, or google sites, or even a free Wix one with ads. nobody cares we just need to be able to look you up, quickly, bc there's like 100 other apps here

Fun fact: I won like $200 in a radio contest in 1992 for my anti-drug ad that was a blatant ripoff of “I learned it by watching you”

ElieNYC@elienyc.bsky.social

Hive mind, settle a Gen X debate for me. What's more famous: "I learned it by watching you" OR "This is your brain on drugs" And if you need more context then you aren't allowed to answer.

I got to go down to the classic rock station and record it. It was cool as hell! I wonder how much cocaine was in the building at the time…
