Wondering what to get the person who has everything for Christmas? Might I suggest my book: a pop-sci foray into love, sex, history, psychology, philosophy, AI, and robots? Still timely, still relevant. Described by one reviewer as “not enough tentacle porn”. www.bloomsbury.com/uk/turned-on...

I now intend to turn up to interview Jonn with a series of placards and a megaphone.

So angry about this i might go there tomorrow and hold a protest. Possibly one in Waterstones. Where i talk about my new book. YEAH

For 33 years I was living in pain every month. I finally had a hysterectomy (for fibroids) and they found endometriosis when they did it. Up til then I'd been told "most women find periods uncomfortable." I'd been unable to walk due to the pain for 1-2 days per month. I was on prescription codeine.

It is when I watch the day begin from the train and the clouds are gone and the sun is bright and my mood lifts, my mind is bright, and my entire body reacts with physical relief that I realise I'm about as sophisticated as a plant.

The Super AGI: I'm sorry. I disassembled the entire human race molecule by molecule to make paperclips. That's on me. Me: what are you talking about, that's not true Super: you're right. That was a failure of alignment and I'm really sorry Me: you haven't made any paper clips at all have you

I saw this live and it was so resonant it had me clenching my jaw in anger and recognition.

I gave a talk at EMF titled "Men in Tech #YesAllMen", in which I told my experience of being a woman in tech. I was afraid to publish it in case it affected my current or future employment. With all the current news I would like to add my 2¢. So here is the recording: youtu.be/WXL6K1lhvt0?...

I have done the thinking and most of the writing and now I need to do the slides but I don't want to so instead I've done laundry, sorted building insurance, posted my Da's birthday present, not done my slides, walked the dog, claimed expenses, sent many emails, organised events, not done slides. ☹️

Ahhh, when I was a little kid nothing was more exciting than dreaming of the day when I could maximise my campaign's impact using objective-based advertising to achieve my B2B marketing goals with LinkedIn Ads.

A deeply unpopular move by SoA, but I'm curious about this and where the lines are. It's harder and harder to avoid genAI as it's baked into everything. It won't just mean chucking stuff into an LLM. It might mean an unavoidable part of a system. I want the detail but the charter is thin on that.

This morning my brain is playing the opening line on repeat from that Meredith Brooks' song because look at everything. Look at it all. Its relentless. I hate the world today. No, your email does not find me well.

Currently, nothing fills my soul with weary loathing like the words "REF impact case study." Does my work have impact? We all like to think our work does. Can we evidence that using REF definitions and criteria? Lol, no.

If there's anyone out there, outside of academia, who thinks "hey, Kate, something in your research changed the way I do things" then let me know because apparently my entire existence is meaningless by REF standards.

Software engineering could and should be done with the same care as any other type of engineering. This is a post in honor of Margaret Hamilton (and also a subtweet of all vibe-coders everywhere).

We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe

New just now in The Atlantic: David Robinson resigned this week. He was among the longest-tenured employees at OpenAI—and oversaw safety reports on 12 frontier launches. He is very worried: “The time for trial and error is over.” You can read his essay here: www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

In lockdown, my kid was 10 and we got them a mobile phone early to encourage keeping in touch with friends while isolated. The kids would call up and play Minecraft together, using it for game chat that they didn't have via another route. It was ambient and companionable and just nice togetherness.

This does indeed smell desperate, but that's not why I'm sharing it. No, the bit that leapt out to me was the @financialtimes.com use of the phrase "Seattle-based cloud giant" to describe Amazon, which sounds beautifully fairytale and captures the nature of this whole industry: magic beans.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

This is the dodgiest and most-desperate thing I’ve seen in the bubble so far. Amazon selling their chips to a group of investors and leasing them back - an off balance sheet arrangement done in plain sight. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. And they’ll probably buy more!

In my hotel room with BBC News on, and there's an AI segment and it's two women I know and like (Stephanie Hare, @ruchowdh.bsky.social ) and whose opinions I respect. SUCH a good thing to see women giving the expert comment (+ also no surprise that it's often women taking the solid critical stance).

Right, I think I've now completed AI for the day. AI+X Summit Zürich continues tomorrow, I believe, but I'll be off back to the UK to do... more AI-related stuff. It never bloody ends. I guess that's what happens when it's your job and also it's an unrelenting chaos industry. 😭
