This story by Jacques Gallant contains, without exaggeration, the single most crushing thing I've read about Canadian justice. In 2004, an 18-year-old got a de facto sentence of Life 25 for non-violent trespassing — and we've kept him in solitary. Genuine tears in my eyes thinking about his life.

With more than 520,000 votes earned and a few polls still left to count, Olivia Chow will be elected with the largest raw vote total of any mayor since Toronto’s amalgamation in 1998. (Many more people in the city since Mel Lastman’s days, of course.)

Chow’s lead is now over 75,000 votes. Her current vote total is already more than 60,000 higher than John Tory’s winning vote total in 2022.

If you’re a Chow supporter, the map of ward-by-ward results is encouraging. Some heavily Bradford wards were reporting relatively large numbers early, and now downtown polls are rolling in.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I mean. What are we doing here. I’d genuinely be hard pressed to think of much that’s truly worse versus 40 years ago. The quality of fish in the grocery store? The durability of some specific kinds of consumer goods? Versus 5 or 10 years ago? Different story.

I think the way to look at this is to ask yourself, what does the E.U.'s quibbling over the right non-committal label for Canada in this moment say about the E.U.'s willingness to come to Canada's aid in the next moment?

POLITICO Europe@politico.eu

Germany, France and at least six other EU countries are pushing against “associate membership” as the name for closer EU ties with Canada, six diplomats involved in the negotiations said.

These are the only acceptable GO Train seat. Always a rough morning when the train arrives with all-new cars with all-uncomfortable seats.

Wildly dangerous and irresponsible: "Instead of trying to stop the outbreak and prevent it from spilling into humans, state and federal officials have done little ... Flu experts were unequivocal that the government should have ordered the farm to cull its mink, as other countries have done."

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

What's particularly stunning/galling here is that 20 years ago (in the Dean/Obama cycles) online donations were a big deal precisely because they were "cheap money" relative to traditional measures; this is just vulture behaviour.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

Remember, it’s only a waste of time and money if we don’t take this result as a mandate to relentlessly humiliate and ostracize this movement.

You would genuinely struggle to find many other non-absurd Y/N polling questions with lower popular support than the question of Alberta independence in Alberta, if these numbers hold at <25% in favour.

(If I’m following correctly, I think he’s saying that the commanders overseeing the exercises were aware of a grassfire in the area but the troops that suffered casualties didn’t visually *see* the fire until it suddenly swept over them within seconds)

Here is the Canadian Armed Forces’ official explanation of what happened at CFB Wainwright, which resulted in 4 deaths and 39 soldiers in hospital: A grassfire inside the training area and spread wildly due to high winds, but no gas infrastructure involved (he later added grenades were being used)

Not the most important thing in this moment, but I sincerely feel the Canadian default crisis-response of offering little to no public information is a deeply toxic trait. We're long past the point where a summary of the known facts can be shared responsibly. Not doing so invites misinformation.

It cannot be acceptable that our authorities just abdicate information sharing about an ongoing crisis to speculation and rumour.

Taking a principled stand that takes place once a year is taking approximately 1/365th of a principled stand. Yes, that’s unfair to many, many individual Americans out on the streets. But I don’t think it’s unfair to America.

I guess I'm a bit jaded is all by this periodic experience of watching America put on a No Kings only to immediately return to the regularly scheduled programming of Kings.

Is there a small impact? That’s totally possible. But the stories of a massive silencing of Russian bots making a qualitative difference on social media discourse… are very likely to have been (significantly) overstated.

Ed Tubb reposted

Y’all, I hate to rain on the dead bot parade, but the Yandex data center destruction doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted social media bots. I made temporal graphs of X posts about AfD around the time of the attack and there’s no sign of a sudden dip or residual impact on that conversation.

I genuinely think one of the most important tasks ahead is that we must never, ever give an inch to the idea that we have an obligation to treat any AI as a being of moral or ethical value.

Carl T. Bergstrom@carlbergstrom.com

Anthropic's new User Policy forbids you from engaging in "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models". It does not, however, explain what the fuck this could possibly mean.

Many of the ultra-influential Silicon Valley philosphies take this idea as the basis of a very dark utilitarianism that we should want nothing at all to do with.

(What is the utilitarian value of a present-day human against the near-infinite future value of countless AI beings through to the heat death of the universe?)

A fun fact about a gluten free diet is it is not *at all* a lower calorie diet. So while I have had the healthiest year in close to two decades in terms of days lost to random bugs and respiratory issues, I have also gained weight.

People aren't more rude. They're just more frequently in situations were rudeness is tolerated or positively encouraged. People who yell on the Internet become sweet little pussycats when you're privately hanging out.

I keep seeing people say some version of "it used to be normal to politely disagree on things before the Internet," and I don't think that's right. It was and remains normal to not be a shithead in face-to-face communication. We just have less of that now, and WAY less with people we disagree with.
