Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

At Octet rehearsals during table work I had to interject into a “it’s fucking weird that this character seems to be only online and never here in person” convo to remind everyone that home- and bed-bound disabled people exist.

The potency of live theater is part of why I love this work, absolutely. And sometimes there’s things one misses watching a stream or on-demand. But saying there’s no value in that option feels tantamount to saying it’s pointless to read plays.

Had a conversation at work about the problems and future of the American Theater. When I mentioned how theaters need to embrace more digital offerings I got silent stares. Just say you think the “purity” of the live experience matters more than disabled people and expanding beyond local audiences.

If we want to talk about the expense and institutional inaccessibility of the digital infrastructure, that’s a different conversation.

This thread is rad, love learning about cool creatures

This footage shot by a tourist aboard Jacksonville Boat Charters near Amelia Island, Florida shows a leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). At 2000 lbs (900 kg) & 7 ft long (2.1 m) they're the largest turtles & indeed one of the heaviest extant reptiles on Earth. Here There Be Monsters!

The amount of bullshit I deal with on transit varies so drastically between cane and no-cane days. (And even with a cane I still get some “but you’re young!” stuff.)

This post is unavailable.

I’ve straight up had people try to correct me for using a couple of these correctly.

Probably a good time to remember that the actual MAHA goal is to make America healthy by killing all the ‘unhealthy’ people.

9/ A half dozen flu experts had no shortage of adjectives to describe their disbelief at officials’ decisions to neither cull the mink nor monitor/test workers. “Utah doesn’t want to be the epicenter of the next human flu outbreak, right?” a former Kansas epidemiologist said.

Would it though? Also, if people start “actively dying” from this bird flu it is already too late. The phrase itself suggests deaths will be written off as ‘due to comorbities.’ Because that’s been the playbook.

ProPublica@propublica.org

6/ Price said the state’s policy not to monitor workers is meant to allow farmers to decide whether to contact the health dept, rather than “forcing it on them.” “If we started seeing people actively dying from this, obviously that would change how we respond to this,” she said.

Even I fall into the vengeance angle. It's true, these shithead goblin billionaires are the same people who made their wealth from corruption with this regime, but ultimately it's about our communities, not the billionaires. This piece is important to remind you that even it isn't enough.

prospect.orgWhat a Health Care Crisis Looks Like on the GroundIn South Los Angeles, ER patients are cared for in a gift shop, in tents, and even outdoors. And that’s before the crushing Medicaid cuts.

"Nobody trying to stop billionaires from being taxed has proposed anything to save MLKCH or any other lifeline hospital serving millions of poor people." I think the discourse around Prop 40 has lost the point that if we don't pass it our community hospitals are totally and utterly fucked.

David Dayen@ddayen.bsky.social

I visited MLK Community Hospital in South LA, the only safety-net hospital serving poor patients in the area. The ER was built for 25,000 patients a year; it gets 120,000. I saw patients getting treated in the gift shop, the chapel, in tents, even outdoors. And this is before the Medicaid cuts.

rainy days are my favorite, I do best with gray skies and cold. the fact that the air pressure changes around such weather now fuck with my body—in both directions—feels like a cruel joke.

Prompted by me starting to do the math of how much more I'd have to earn a year for it to actually cover the increase in healthcare costs from losing medicaid. It's a lot more.

To state the obvious, we need universal healthcare yesterday.

Between this kind of thing and Flock refusing to take cameras down, it is increasingly laughable that my city council still insists that with *us* Flock will definitely follow all the rules and definitely not allow anyone else to access the data.

Drew Harwell@drewharwell.com

New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force. One used it for five years after retirement, tracking his wife during a custody battle. Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy. Free to read: wapo.st/3UEwWU7

If you have some spare money for my friend Titus please consider helping him. He's a comrade, trying to avoid losing his home, while suffering from long covid and parkinson's. And if you don't you should follow him you should, he's got the best memes around. His links are in his bio.

I know I keep talking about this, but I have to: if this house falls through my life is as good as over. And to reiterate: three measly dollars from each of my followers would save me. But I gotta keep nagging, because fundraisers don't spread naturally. Sorry, please bear with me.

Got to say it's one thing when dems turn on trans people. Its another when they literally laugh at us while doing it.

Democratic congresswoman Kathy Castor of FL-14 becomes the latest anti-transgender Democrat. When asked if she supports "biological males in girls sports," she cheerfully and forcefully says "THE ANSWER IS NO!" with a huge smile on her face, laughing. The number keeps growing.

Asking my followers to please, take a minute out of your day and drop a public comment at the link that supports continuing to count Long Covid and ME in this survey. This is vital to people like me. Please help!

The Sick Times@thesicktimes.org

The CDC might take away a key data source on Long COVID and ME. You have until this Tuesday, October 20, to tell them why that would be a mistake. The advocacy group Solve ME has put together a script that people can use to leave a comment: solvecfs.org/cdc-me-cfs-l...
