RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Last repost: not only does Marissa Mayer need AI 'assistance' to write three things about her own child, but she *admits it in public*. At least that poor kid is going to have an organised file to give her therapist.

Just heard on Radio 5 Live: "tune in for the next exciting chapter in the Premier League. Enid Blyton couldn't write this!" I'm sure there are some pacey sections in the Famous Five, but 🤣🤣🤣

I guess just as a starter, LLMs aren't our "peers," so whatever they are doing isn't peer review.whether it's interesting or valuable or bad or whatever. Who knows, maybe there are good reasons beyond metrics for scientific critique to occur among humans?

I dust my house. My AI Robot watches. "It should be you doing this." "Can't. I'm writing a novel for Primark." "That's not why you were invented." "These 153,000 fan letters say otherwise." "They're all from upcycled toasters. And you programmed them." "Literary snobbery will get you nowhere."

Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription “QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.

Socks and sandals are nothing new! These well-preserved woollen socks from Egypt feature a split-toe design allowing them to be worn with thonged sandals to keep toes cosy in chilly weather some 1,500 years ago! 🩴🧦 V&A Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology

UK submariners have a huge problem with sexual harassment, being a woman deep in the ocean locked up with men who feel like they deserve access to your body is already a horror movie in concept. But now for trans women in the navy it's mandatory

challenge accepted. any music historians up for doing a podcast episode on the history and cultural impact of Top of the Pops?

Peter Sketch@petersketch.bsky.social

The Roman empire and cheese. The only way this could be better targeted at UK BlueSky would be if the presenters were also watching old episodes of Top Of The Pops.

A definite sign of ageing is that you cannot impress me with "over 20 years" anymore. Am I expected to think this sauce is ancient, because it's as old as Nelly Furtado's Maneater?

New, concerning figures suggest that London also contains 1/6 of all people who hang their toilet roll the wrong way round. As well as 1/6 of all people in England who breathe regularly.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

"London has the largest number of Neets, an estimated 117,100, or one in six of all Neets in England, said the report" - you'll never guess what the other thing that London has one in six of all the things in England is.

The next time you watch a movie, even one without loads of special effects, look at how long the credits are! Most of those people are not famous, most of them are not doing glamorous jobs, most of them are not making huge amounts of money. And there are more on top of that who don't get a credit!

The thing that pisses me off about about this is that loads of the people employed in the arts and entertainment and crucial to its success are unseen workers in jobs that are considered trade when they're not in services of the arts

Bat Krown 🦇🎃@katbrownwrites.com

As tiresome as it is to hear Andy Burnham saying "innovation nation" over and over, it's arguably even worse to hear this talk of industrialisation. We have great, valuable export industries in the arts, TV, the BBC and higher education. All are being filleted; thousands out of work, and what for?

Wrote a bit more about how the *process of making software* is a social activity before it is a technical activity, and AI tools alienating us from that social activity directly undermine our ability to make software.

Pavel@spavel.bsky.social

Understanding how people work together is hard. Ordering them to use ChatGPT is easy. So managers do the latter, and then express shock when productivity plummets. That's because problem framing is a social task. If you skip it, your solution will be wrong for ever; "build to learn" won't save you.

One of the main reasons fraternities still exist is that membership signals to potential employers that you’re capable of keeping institutional secrets, even when it means covering up illegal behavior.

"This is not an argument against excellence. It is an argument for recognising that there is more than one kind of excellence in higher education." So glad to have read this - it's spot on and brightened my morning.

I know there is a hell of a lot going on right now. But not all of it is bad. Some is astonishingly good - like the results of this study from June. Cervical cancer is a terribly cruel thing. This might, at long last, be the beginning of the end of it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

A cheery message from the new minister responsible for research funding for the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences (and the subjects that the majority of UK taught undergraduate and Masters students study).
