I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

Something I spoke about before was how transphobia is often an expression of misogyny, it gives people who hate women an outlet and sets trans women up as a class of women it's socially okay to be misogynistic towards, while also providing an ideological justification for that misogyny.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

You have to laugh at the sheer insanity of Turning Point UK being found to be organising literal contract killings and paid agitation at protests up and down the country and it barely even raises a flicker across the press. If that isn't 'terrorism' on some level I don't really know what is

Really important, on Trafalgar Day, to observe that there are both women and black people included in this image. It's not anachronistic or "woke" to tell their stories, and ignoring them is doing a disservice not only to those people but also to their contemporaries who made sure they were seen.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk undermined Ukraine's defences – directly aiding Putin's war machine. That's beyond the pale. The Prime Minister must stand up to Trump and forge a united front in Europe. We cannot allow Musk and Starlink to gain even more power over our continent.

There's this odd tendency to view stories not as narratives constructed by one or more hands, but as fictional documentaries, these windows into a fictional universe and the story is just there so that the windows have something to hang on.

Don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, but this feels somewhat complacent, given that we arguably have at least three far right political parties, we’ve had two years of violent far right rioting and targeted attacks on minorities, and the largest far right march since before World War II was last year.

The Man Who Would Be King is quite a short story to adapt into a 2-hour feature film, so the attentive viewer will likely notice inclusions from other Kipling stories. You would have to be *really* well-read on the period to discover that John Huston also drew on contemporary travel writings too.

Amy "Thunderjam" Chase@amythunderjam.bsky.social

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

In particular, George Robertson's 1896 book The KΓ‘firs of the Hindu-Kush, which narrates his own travels in Kafiristan, supplies several details such as a treacherous river crossing and the name 'Utah' ('Ootah' in film) for one character. Hence one 'Colonel Robertson' preceding Dravot and Carnehan.

The Japanese imperial project was dangerous precisely because it was attractive – not to all, but at least to a critical mass across the colonial empires of East Asia (in which we must include the ROC, which inherited late Qing settler colonies in Inner Asia).

And just to head off possible accusation this is not me calling the Japanese empire *good*, but there seems to be a particular tendency on this site to assume that to all people in Asia in the 1930s-40s, the Japanese empire was self-evidently terrible, and that just doesn't match reality.

but only after years of active cooperation with Japan. In the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos' father was a collaborator and executed by the local resistance; in Indonesia, both Sukarno and Suharto were higher-ups in the Japanese-run administration. Even in China the Japanese found allies.

A while back I remember Discourse around here over why American politics seems so much more religious compared to the UK, and I wonder if the answer lies in the UK being much more of a multi*faith* society. 9.77% of the UK follows a religion that isn't Christianity, vs 4.2% of the US.

And in the US' case, 2.2% of the population are Jewish, so only 2% of the population doesn't follow a religion that can easily be co-opted by the 'Judeo-Christian' label. Britain just seems to have more religious diversity in this respect.

Belated statement that, put another way, it's less that the UK has a higher proportion of 'nones' – who mostly come out of a Christian baseline milieu anyway – but that it has a higher proportion of believers-other-than-Christians, which in speaks a lot to their respective migration histories.

Case in point: in Hong Kong, ethnicity rarely comes up and I am typically 'Nationality: British'. In the UK, I'm 'Mixed-Other' because 'Mixed-White/Chinese' doesn't seem to exist as a category for most purposes.
