Hello Stranger, Re-introduction time! I'm Epidiah Ravachol. Perhaps you've heard of my #ttrpg work, like Dread, the horror game that uses Jenga; or Swords Without Master, the one with the tones.† I've been at this indie truly-true role-playing game publishing gig for roughly a quarter century.

Rereading Larry Hama’s G.I. Joe, and I continue to be struck by how Cobra’s recruitment speeches and slogans could easily be Elon Musk tweets.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

This is such a fantastic photo: "The Witches' Tea Party" but I want to use it to explain the origin of the tall, pointy witches hat. The real story of this photo: These are residents at the Hospital of the Holy & Undivided Trinity: an almshouse in Castle Rising, Norfolk, England established 1610.

Three decades later, I distinctly remember quite a few images from those games. But the most lasting one, was after the game was done, watching my friends suddenly sprint to their cars in the dark when one of them got spooked and the whole herd fled. That felt powerful.

I ran Chill late at night, in a basement, with our primary source of light being a desk lamp placed on the ground and pointed at a blood red carpet. Kind of a fire hazard, looking back on it. But back then we also used to go to abandoned quarries and blow old action figures up with quarter sticks.

And, listen, the Old Eppy you see before you, the one who has seen the glittering c-beams, has nothing against this sort of horror or any other angle you want to enjoy the genre from. Even enjoys some. But Young Eppy, the one typing in anger all those decades ago, was so bored with all the draculas.

I remember Chill being a fairly easy sell to my friend group back then. Probably thanks to the X-Files. The idea of an under-resourced secret society out there trying to keep the world safe from all manner of spooky stuff from the Unknown made for a fruitful campaign premise.

I had a couple problems. The first, and persistent, problem is that I don't find Lovecraft remotely scary. And I wanted a little bit of scary in my horror roleplaying, you know?

So, I set Call of Cthulhu aside. It was its own, goofy thing which is horror, because the genre is more expansive than just "scary things," but not horror in the way I craved. The second problem was that, throughout all mediums, not just ttrpgs, horror was enjoying a power fantasy moment.

Back in the late 1900s, I had things to say about horror role-playing. At the time I was grappling with genres within genres. Nowadays, I leave categorization up to the librarians. They're better at it than I. But at the time, I was a bit frustrated with what I saw as the state of things.

I've been really enjoying my Spooky Season, watching some horror films, talking about them with friends and parasocials, pulling out a bunch of old horror anthologies the Science Fiction Book Club tricked me into buying back in the 80s, and listening to so many horror soundtracks.

In today's CSS Adventures, our hero learns that the difference between `position: relative` and `position: absolute` is that they're both relative.

Me: "Hmm, I'd like to change the look of this webpage. I wonder what the solution is." CSS: "Have you tried wrapping it in another <div>?"

I ain’t gonna front: last year @sandyjarrell.com and I released one of the coolest books EVER, an introduction to the DC Universe in narrative form influenced by tons of stuff that came before us, filtered through our own fevered brains, all in a kid-friendly package. We rule the wasteland.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Shout out to all my fellow indie #ttrpg publisher friends, and independent artist and writer and musician friends, et al. You've all, individually, made roughly $80 billion more† than Anthropic so far this year. Starting to think we might be the future. † ±0.001% margin of error.

@elemei.bsky.social knocked it out of the park with that cover! Through some strange sorcery, it's both completely different and instantly recognizable as a thumbnail, an icon in your folder of #ttrpg pdfs, & a real life book. Your eye focuses on different details & is drawn in, no matter the size.

I suppose it is nice to know that, for all that it was unsustainable for paying my bills, Bedroom Wall Press has literally made at least a dozen orders of magnitude more money than any AI startup.

Update on the use of AI text in Chaosium Community Content programs @drivethrurpg.com. TL/DR: Don't use it in our programs. AI is not art. It is theft from you and every writer who has gone before you, repackaged dishonestly and shamelessly as original. www.chaosium.com/blogupdate-o...

“I use AI because I can’t do X” cool, learn “well I cant learn how because I don’t have talent” okay setting aside my ‘talent is propaganda” soapbox for a second - have you considered collaborating with a group of fellow sickos with varying skillsets?? It is truly incredible, I highly recommend it.

You know what they should do? They should just reboot something from my childhood. Over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over again.
