I used to get paid work on software for people to write software. Since retiring I still kind of do, as open source. I’m also setting up a Museum of Technical and Advanced Computing http://motaac.org/ in downtown San José, CA. Proudly antifa.

All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again. Bluesky VC so far: • $8M via a seed round on July 5, 2023 • $13M via a Series A round led by "Blockchain Capital" on October 24, 2024 If you think you're not the product here, you're wrong. #enshittification #roteconomy

i know the trot of my tone here seems slightly flippant because thats just the nature of posting, but this makes me deeply, deeply sad. like physically ill. i cannot believe there are people out there doing this. i cannot imagination seeing reflection on your own child as a task to streamline

As the LLM & other generative AI advocates get more and more lost and drone-like, they really do seem like they’re going to all start saying, in unison, “Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service us.” #butlerianjihad #resistanceisfutile

the big thing the rise of LLMs has revealed to me is that there is a not insignificant chunk of the population that considers cognition itself to be a frustrating and unnecessary burden

Same. All the babies saying they "have" to stay there because of their ostensibly huge audiences all... had fewer followers than me.

I left X *because* I had a large following. People told me I was the reason they were staying on there, and I didn’t want to be responsible for 100k+ people sticking around for abuse, CSAM, and Nazis. Simple as that

Hey, remember the last time agents were the next big thing? No not that time (“Society of Mind”), I mean the other time. No, not that other other time (“Knowledge Navigator”), the *other* other time! You know, General Magic and TeleScript.

We’d have agents booking travel for us instead of calling travel agents! And scheduling meetings for us instead of having to work those out ourselves, by running code in some sort of cloud! Nobody could quite say how it’d actually work but it was gonna be great! Anyway, that was circa 1992.

“It’s inevitable! It’s here to stay! It’s unavoidable! It’s the future!” Nah, it’s shit on top of shit on top of shit. Butlerian Jihad now so people stop being taken in by this insanity.

agents are online, and they’re here to stay. open protocols are the layer that lasts, so excited to see human agent interactions being prototyped on delve.town

This is a sitting member of Congress who called for immigrants to be executed by throwing them to their deaths out of helicopters. Mike Collins personally amplified neo-Nazi propaganda online. It's disqualifying for a member of Congress and for a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

this is the fucking problem with all the "AI is useful" shit, it's like... it's all, constantly, always, me me me me me. not one second spent thinking about the degradation of literally everything about life and society, just my convenience trumps all.

If you use or approve of so called AI you are a contemptible piece of shit and I do not respect you. Go fuck yourself. Block me already so I don’t have to block you.

this is the thing right, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the utter depravity of silicon valley but I never foresaw the all-out embrace of spam. I thought "spam is bad" was one of the very few things the FAANGs were serious about, even if only to protect their ad monopolies.

Eric Ravenscraft@lordravenscraft.bsky.social

something that fascinates me about this is how, for many years, whole teams inside giant tech companies were devoted to preventing exactly this scenario you didn't 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 most of your traffic to be from bots trying to game the system, so people worked hard to prevent it

the "agentic" vision of computing is a spam world where everyone has their own personal army of spam bots working 24/7 on their behalf choking everything with spam to try and get one over on the next guy. and that's just not something that can really... exist, long term?

This is quite literally what happened to one of my grandparents in 1933. You know, in case we still have folks in the “it’s not fascism if it doesn’t meet these very specific, arbitrary characteristics based on my own refusal to accept responsibility to oppose it” crowd.

You can’t get more Gestapo than this…. “a criminal probe into her immigration paperwork, which her late father filled out after the family emigrated to the U.S. from Somalia when she was a child”

Hey, John, no matter how ‘happening’ the Nazi bar is, how much ‘action’ is at the Nazi bar, it’s still a Nazi bar and nobody reasonable should go there.

Anthropic is saying that their products present an existential risk to humanity in their IPO prospectus. With a warning like that, it sounds to me like anyone who participates in promoting or enabling Anthropic or their products is acting as an enemy of the species. #butlerianjihad

What do they think should be done about people who actively work towards humanity’s extinction, I wonder? Wouldn’t that be exactly the sort of thing subject to universal jurisdiction under international law?

I don’t want to be a dick. But having read a few things by this Yudkowsky guy and now seeing that he left school in middle school and didn’t go to high school or college I think I’m understanding the situation a lot better, or things at least seem to fit.

The bizarre culture that’s sprung up around Silicon Valley AI companies - which overlaps hugely with rationalist and effective altruist circles - appears to be seriously pressuring some women into attending sex parties for the sake of networking. This is, needless to say, horrifying.

Women trying to succeed in Silicon Valley AI and effective altruist spaces are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend sex parties - where people have reported being sexually assaulted, like below. Events like Aella’s “Slutcon,” which is happening again this weekend.

Why talk about how nuts the AI rationalist sex cult is, and not just focus on the (very real) risks and harms of AI? Well, when we're discussing "who should get to regulate AI, and how," I think it's VERY relevant to talk about the antisocial, unsettling ways many people running US AI think.

Hey, for all the people who said that LLMs are transformative fair use of the intellectual property they ingest during training? Yeah, doesn't seem like that's what even the LLM providers think…

There’s a move I’ve coined the “Black Mirror Gambit” which works by presenting your company as the villain in a Black Mirror episode to soak up this mid-2020s-era investor demand for, well, evil plots. That’s the playbook.

The people who are running the massively powerful and lucrative US AI industry pretty much all know about this chart, and quite a few directly participated in the proceedings. Speaking of the rationalist sex cult who regard a Harry Potter fanfic as their Bible, and who also have tons of money.

Like you will not be able to fully understand how dangerous the leaders of the US AI industry really are without engaging with this cursed lore, unfortunately.

One that guarantees not just political rights like free speech, free association, privacy, and fair jury trials, but also the rights to not starve or thirst, to not die of treatable illness or injury, to safety from the elements, to live where one wants, and to choose one’s own path in life.
